201 pages of profoundly fascinating and delightful illustrated history. Author's father (b. 1870) left Yorkshire, England with his young family for Canada in 1909 and arrived in Fife Lake, Saskatchewan where they spent their first winter in a straw house. Author was born in a sod house in 1910 and moved with his family to Montana when he was 6 years old. At age 14 the family moved to Victoria, B.C. and from there to Nanoose Bay, further up Vancouver Island. Most pages contain brief text, accompanied by the author's simple sketches of the way things were. He has stressed the most practical elements of daily life and survival. A priceless compilation of the challenges and genius of the pioneer. Examples include: how to hunt prairie antelope by wearing a white sheet; avoiding flying ants by erecting a pole to your wagon and hanging a coat at its top; uprooting stumps by tying them to nearby trees to be felled; cutting wood by rigging a buzzsaw to the back wheel of a Model "T" Ford truck; and many, many more. Mentions Vancouver Island landmarks such as the Arlington Hotel, Lantzville Hotel, Quarterway Hotel, and more. This book lends itself wonderfully to teaching youngsters the ways of the not-so-distant past. You will have great difficulty in putting it down. Book
24874No place or date but circa 1971. An interesting document on the South African situation at the beginning of the 1970s written in support of apartheid by a leading British journalist. See Coote’s entry in the Oxford DNB. From the papers of Philip Dosse who was proprietor of Hansom Books publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See ‘Death of a Bookman’ by the novelist Sally Emerson editor of ‘Books and Bookmen’ at the time of Dosse’s suicide in Standpoint magazine October 2018. There is no indication where if anywhere the present item was published. Coote explains the context at the very beginning: ‘Early last year I visited two samples of the controversial Republic of South Africa - the Cape Province which is the oldest region settled by Europeans and the Transkei which is the most advanced of the Bantustans. I had a suspicion that the growls and oaths with which the policy of apartheid is normally bombarded by critics from outside might not be wholly deserved. . My conclusions from examining this corner of the vast territory of South Africa were that nobody could really define an alternative to the principle of apartheid in the unique conditions prevailing in South Africa; . I was therefore glad to be able to check up during the first two months of 1971 these provisional conclusions. There were two main criteria. One was what were the conditions in other parts of the country - the Transvaal the Orange Free State Natal and South-West Africa. The other was the effect of a number of highly important happenings during the preceding year.’ A total of 19pp 4to in five sections: ONE: ‘South Africa Revisited’. Numbered in autograph ‘I’. 4pp 4to. TWO: ‘South Africa’s Economic Problems’. Numbered in autograph ‘II’. 4pp 4to. THREE: ‘III South Africa’s Economy’. 3pp 4to. FOUR: ‘II Nibbles at Apartheid’. 4pp 4to. FIVE: ‘White Man’s Burdens’. Numbered in autograph ‘III’. 4pp 4to. Each page on a separate leaf and the whole held together with paper clips together with a slip of paper with ‘Sir Colin Coote’ on it. There manuscript additions in the margins of the first two sections and minor emendations to them and the last section. On the reverse of the last leaf of all is the deleted autograph passage: ‘I wonder if the Archbishop ever peceived that there are two Commandments in the South African politics. The first is “Thou shald not sabotage European supremacyâ€. The second equally a Divine injunction is “Thou shalt not neglect non-Europeansâ€.’ In good condition lightly aged and worn with slight rusting from paperclips. No place or date, but circa 1971. unknown
152 pages. Large oblong book measuring 10" x 14.5". 19009720London c. 1900. Second Anglo-Boer War souvenir handkerchief 45 x 45 cm printed in blue ink on fine linen a couple of trivial spots blank verso. Set in the borders of a map showing the contested regions of South Africa chiefly Orange Free State and Transvaal is the text of Rudyard Kipling's poem 'The Absent-Minded Beggar' with the music of Arthur Sullivan. The map is further adorned with portraits of Queen Victoria and Field Marshal Lord Roberts who was commander of British forces in the field between December 1899 and December 1900. It was published by the Daily Mail then a relatively new but highly successful British newspaper: established in 1896 its circulation had soared to over a million - the largest in the world - by the war's end in 1902. Kipling presented his poem to the Mail which established a charitable fund soon known as the Absent Minded Beggar Fund to provide comforts for British troops on campaign and support for their families at home. Sullivan was prevailed upon to set it to music and it was first sung in public in November 1899. It caught the public mood and was reproduced in many forms. The handkerchiefs were in circulation by March 1900. Local newspapers carry advertisements from wholesalers and retailers around the country all promising to donate a portion of the profits to the fund. Advertising in the Bradford Daily Telegraph 8 March 1900 one vendor described them as the latest novelty a work of art further suggesting that they could make a useful present everybody pleased with them. An Exeter draper excitedly advertised another delivery in the March 28 issue of the Western Echo. They seem to have sold for between twopence and threepence each. Map unknown
