19353784London: Daily Mail 1935. Single Sheet. Fair. Herbert Sydney Foxwell 1890 - 1943 UK. A scarce example of an uncommon piece of ephemeral prewar artwork by Herbert Foxwell - signed in print "Foxwell" at bottom right - with his iconic knot-tailed mouse in the upper left corner and his fellow cartoon characters in the other three corners. The certificate has a silver gelatin photograph mounted at center showing the first prize winner - a Miss Margaret Crisp sitting beside her winning entry into the then-popular Sand Design Competition. This particular event was held in the town of Dovercourt on July 26th 1935. Certificate printed in red and blue onto manila-colored light card details filled in with black fountain pen ink and dated "1935" photo pasted-down near center. Certificate is worn and torn with creases and light soil. "In 1933 Foxwell was asked to continue another popular comics series: 'Teddy Tail' originally created by Charles James Folkard in 1915. This fantasy comic about a little mouse with a knot in its tail was published in The Daily Mail supplement The Boy's & Girl's Daily Mail. This led to Foxwell leaving Amalgamated Press for Associated Newspapers. 'Teddy Tail' became popular enough during this period to inspire a fan club. During Foxwell's run the title character was remodeled into a schoolboy and several new cast members were added such as Mrs. Whisker the Mouse Piggy the Pig Kitty Puss the Cat and Dougie the Duck. Foxwell's art furthermore appeared on postcards jigsaw puzzles and other merchandising." from lambiek dot net. Daily Mail unknown
19174024Daily Mail & Pictorial Newspaper Co. Ltd 1917. Postcards. Good. Three battlefront postcards all measuring c. 3-1/2 inches tall x 5-1/2 inches wide. Two are RPPCs published by The Daily Mirror - Canadian Official Series both of these cards are real sepia toned photographs and not cards from the Mirror's photogravure or half tone reprint series and one is a four color halftone published by the Daily Mail all are great action shots. Of particular interest are the tank with "C.5" painted on the left side and "Canada's Bag" with captured German troops marching through town - this photo allows fairly intimate detail of the uniforms and individual faces to be seen. All cards are postally unused with wear and soil. "Canada's Bag" as shown here is here a large troop of captured German soldiers filing past Canadian troops with "Canadian Official" printed at bottom right.
