Noel Alexandre or Alexander Natalis 1639-1724 was a French historian and theologian of the Order of St. Dominic who studied philosophy and theology in the convent of Saint Jacques Paris where he taught for twelve years obtained the licentiate from the Sorbonne and in 1675 the doctorate and was urged to write a complete history of the church the first volume appearing in 1677. “His directness and conciseness his critical acumen and his manner of viewing history and dividing it into special studies then quite original although now common enough won for him the approbation of the learned. The first volumes of the history brought him letters of commendation and praise from Pope Innocent XI and many cardinals but later volumes gave offense at Rome because of the author's Gallicism and Innocent XI finally forbade the faithful to read .it" Cath.Ency. Alexandre corrected the work in the third edition. Constantino Roncaglia brought out a sixth edition unaltered but with the addition of paragraphs and dissertations correcting the most offensive statements. The work was thus removed from the Index by Pope Benedict XIII. The edition offered here is the best and most complete edited by Giovan Domenico Mansi who added many explanatory notes. An anonymous writer in two supplementary volumes also included here carried the history into the eighteenth century and added various dissertations from other historians. The work thus completed appeared at Venice in 1778 in eleven folio volumes and at Bingen 1785-91 in twenty volumes. Brunet I 169. G. C. Voigt hardcover

The work was translated into Dutch and edited and enlarged by Jan Lodewyk Schuer who published the Groot algemeen historisch geographisch genealogisch en oordeelkundig woordboek 1733 and by Arnoldus Henricus Westerhoff or Westerhovius rector of the Latin school in Gouda and publisher of the Algemeen kunstwoordenboek der wetenschappen 1734. Westerhoff died while editing the work and his work was taken over by an anonymous editor. The book was published in parts five for the first volume and five for the second. It is enriched with at least 80 folding plates some made especially for the Dutch edition. The folding engraved plates illustrate the process of distilling the art of measuring and domestic chemistry. Under the S one also finds the "Secrets" which include water divination how to extract gold from gilt frames and the "secrets of Hippocrates". Other engravings depict garden designs plants and even a design for a fireplace. Most of the eighty folding engraved plates however illustrate the catching of birds fish and animals - not only rabbits and hares but also wolves and foxes all by means of a wide variety of traps and complicated machines. The text gives mostly advice on the keeping and care of domestic animals on beekeeping and on the cutting of trees. The Huishoudelyk woordboek is also a cookbook with many recipes for meals and home medicines although the title doesn't suggest that and also tips and tricks for keeping one's beauty and health. 178035911France 1780. Line engraving. Proof before title state ii/iv. Image size: 16 11/16 x 12 11/16 inches. An impressive proof impression of this famous portrait of George Washington and one of the first accurate likenesses of the General to be produced in Europe.<br/> <br/>This is a remarkably rare proof impression of this fascinating portrait of George Washington and one of the earliest European prints to produce an accurate likeness of this celebrated American hero. Public curiosity for prints of Revolutionary heroes was not limited to America but spread to the English and European print shops where an inquisitive audience clamored for a glimpse of the key figures of the war. One of the first correct likenesses of Washington to make its way over to Europe was Charles Wilson Peale's magnificent painting. At this time Peale had executed a number of similar portraits of Washington and so it is impossible to determine which exact painting was taken to France. The inscription on Le Mire's print informs us that Le Paon based his portrait on a painting of Washington he saw in the collection of the Marquis de Lafayette. This verifies since Washington's countenance and stance in Le Paon's portrait and Le Mire's engraving echo Peale's fine portraits. Washington's face and uniform are identical as are his stance and gestures; his hand cupped inside his vest was used repeatedly by Peale in his series of works on the General. A very similar companion portrait of Lafayette was also executed by Le Paon and Le Mire which makes the link between Peale's painting and this image almost definitive. By adding a more complicated composition Le Mire's has converted Peale's simplified portrait to suit European taste. Washington is cloaked in the grand tradition of French portraiture. A simple background has been changed to show a military encampment and the scattered papers act as a symbol of his involvement in the Revolution. The inclusion of a horse and groomsman shows the more decorative style of French portraiture and the complex composition and meticulous details combine to create an image that reflects the taste of its European audience. In his hand Washington holds a copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Treaty of Alliance and he stands on a mound of shredded British conciliatory bills. This engraving is an indicator of Washington's image in Europe; he is pictured as a powerful military and political leader and a genteel figure whose sagacity and expertise over threw British rule in America.<br/> <br/>Hart Catalogue of Engraved Portraits of Washington 31 ii/iv; Wick George Washington an American Icon p.28-33; Fowble Two Centuries of Prints in America 1680-1880 no.81; Cresswell The American Revolution in Drawings and Prints no.229; Baker 21. unknown books
