Single sheet of stout card measuring approx. 4.5 x 7.5 inches (12.0 x 19.0 cms), obverse with gilt edges printed with the insignia of 'Admiral Inspector of the Fleet' in gilt and black and seasonal text in black; reverse blank, the whole housed in custom-made solander case. The seasonal text, SIGNED BY DONITZ IN BLUE INK , reads 'Grossadmiral Donitz dankt fur die guten Wunsche zum Weihachtsfest und zum neuen jahr und erwidert sie herzlich'. Grossadmiral Karl Donitz (1871-1980), German naval leader and Hitler's successor, commanded the Kriegsmarine during the latter half of WWII and is remembered particularly for his promotion of the U-boat offensive. He also served as Reichspraesident following Hitler's suicide in April 1945. Having authorised the German surrender he became a prisoner-of-war of the British and was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment for war crimes (primarily for ordering unrestricted submarine warfare). Following his release from Spandau in October 1956, Donitz's reputation underwent a degree of rehabilitation and he took considerable pains to answer correspondence and to provide autographs when required (including a facsimile for historians and collectors of the Articles of Surrender which he co-signed with Montgomery). HOWEVER, DOCUMENTS SIGNED BY DONITZ DURING THE WAR YEARS ARE SCARCE.

Paris s. d. 1945 11.50 x 22 cm 3 pages in-4 Autograph manuscript by the author 3 pages in-8 published in issue 21 4 November 1945 of Paysage Dimanche. Complete manuscript written on both sides in a very dense hand with numerous deletions corrections and additions. Together with the complete typescript bearing 3 autograph corrections in black ink. This text by Maurice Blanchot « Les malheurs de ""Peau d'âne"" » contains two paradoxes. Contrary to what its title suggests it does not deal with the work of Charles Perrault; furthermore this column is devoted to the tales of an author whom the critic had already cited in his article on the fantastic novel published the previous year in the Journal des Débats and whose work he appeared to have little taste for: Noël Devaulx. » A subtly political reading of Noël Devaulxs tales. s. n. 19465703N.p. London: British Army Department of the Scientific Adviser to the Army Council 1946. First edition. Acceptable/Exercise Musk Ox was the first big Allied peacetime military maneuver after World War II. It took place in the polar region of Canada around Hudson Bay on the assumption that the arctic would be an important battleground in future wars. The maneuvers were intended to try out equipment and techniques. The Canadian army invited military observers from several nations including Britain. The expedition set out from Fort Churchill on Hudson Bay in February 1946 to travel over 3100 miles on "snowmobiles" that is modified 4-passenger light tanks that had been designed for an invasion of Norway which never happened. The route went north from Churchill to Denmark Bay then west to Norman Wells and south to finish at Edmonton. Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Croft 1906-1998 was the official observer for the British military. Before the war Croft had distinguished himself on the 1934 Lindsay expedition to Greenland covering over 1000 miles. The Wikipedia article on Croft claims that as a result of the Greenland trek Croft held the Guinness-endorsed record for longest self-sustaining journey for more than 60 years. For this and other expeditions he received the Polar Medal and the Back Award from the Royal Geographical Society. His distinguished wartime career included serving with a Special Forces unit behind enemy lines in Tunisia and several other covert missions in Scandinavia Corsica Italy and France for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. After acting observer of Exercise Musk Ox he was seconded to the Canadian Department of National Defense to develop clothing and equipment for Arctic warfare. Crofts report was produced for internal distribution only and very few copies exist OCLC locates one only. This copy belonged to the inveterate French polar explorer Paul-Emile Victor 1907-1995 whose life is as closely associated with Arctic regions as his friend Jacques Cousteau's is with the ocean. This copy of the Musk Ox report not only shows Victor's bookplate but includes an autograph signed declaration in French "The author Lt. Col. Andrew Croft is one of my friends. In 1934 with the Lindsay expedition he crossed the empty ice from Disko Bay to Uummannaq. Upon arriving Lindsay and Croft gave me their dogs and they became my top dogs " The text is illustrated with Croft's excellent photography. 34 cm; 59 1 24 2 pages and folding map. Appendices include 42 half-tone plates after photographs and table of recorded wind velocities. Distribution list at end. 1925W1862New York: Unpublished 1925. Original photograph by the Australian-American photographer Anton Bruehl 1900-1982. A vintage circa 1925 gelatin silver print mounted on cardstock. 7 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. The photograph is unsigned but the composition of the still-life photo includes a roughly torn piece of paper that includes the caption that was handwritten by the photographer and is signed "Greetings Anton Bruehl." In 1919 the Australian born Bruehl along with his brother and parents emigrated to the United States where he worked for Western Electric as an electrical engineer until an exhibition of Clarence H. White's photographs persuaded him to change professions. In 1924 he enrolled in White's photography school and by the next year was hired to teach in the school. In a 1976 article for Image magazine landscape photographer Joe Deal observed that "Anton Bruehl's background in engineering and love of machine forms in combination with his training under Clarence White resulted in still life photographs which give the satisfaction of well-resolved formal problems and portraits choreographed with the rhythm and movement characteristic of the age." Bruehl's early black and white still-life photographs are much more scarce than his later color images and they seldom come on the market. The photograph is clean and bright with just a hint of edgewear and a 1-inch crease line at the bottom edge. . First Edition. Single Sheet. Collectible-Very Good.
