Plates bright and clean. Henry Noel Humphreys 1807-1879 was a graphic artist and author born in Birmingham. His illustration work ranged from natural history and book illumination to works of fiction. He would do the incredibly attractive illustrations in Jane Loudon's Ladies' Flower Garden Series 1839-1848. The present title was first published in 1841 but several editions followed. Humphreys would also publish a similar work on Moths in 1845 and a second work on moths and butterflies in 1859. The memoir written in Coward's amusing style covers his life until 1931; it was followed by Future Indefinite and Past Conditional. 431 pp. Blue cloth binding. Some light shelf wear and fading to the spine; overall in fine condition.<br style="">The French actor cabaret singer and entertainer Maurice Chevalier is perhaps best known for his signature songs including "Louise" "Mimi" "Valentine" and "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and for his films including The Love Parade and The Big Pond. Howes 194 First edition.<br /><br />Ives was born in New York City in 1828 and was a graduate of the United States Military Academy in 1852. As a Lieutenant from 1853 to 1854 he was appointed by the U.S. Army to the Topographical Engineers as assistant to Lt. A.W. Whipple in the Pacific Railroad survey along the 35th parallel. From 1857 to 1858 Ives commanded an expedition to explore up the Colorado River from its mouth. At Robinson's Landing he built then used the 54 foot paddlewheel steamboat Explorer to map and survey the river. His party included Smithsonian associate John Strong Newberry as geologist. He led his party up the Colorado to the lower end of the Grand Canyon then struck out across the desert to Fort Defiance in Colorado. Ives Reported his findings in his 1861 Report upon the Colorado river of the West. The Ives expedition produced one of the important early maps of the Grand Canyon drawn by F. W. v. Egloffstein topographer to the expedition. Ives next served as engineer and architect for the Washington National Monument from 1859 to 1860. During the American Civil War he joined the Confederate Army and served in several engineering capacities and was finally appointed aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis from 1863 to 1865. Articles in German French Danish and English. Heavily illustrated on different colored pages with collages and comics in addition to the texts. <br /></p><p>Many of the articles highlight the differences between various factions of the Situationists. For instance there's a spirited defense of the Spur group which had been expelled from the Situationist International. Laid in is an June 26 1967 Autograph Postcard Signed from Vivien Leigh to actress Lilli Palmer and her husband Carlos Thompson: "Quite obviously you and Carlos think they are a bore but I am far more worried about L. I would love to see you fondly as always Vivien". â€L.†refers to Laurence Olivier by then married to Joan Plowright was Olivier’s new wife after the divorce. Leigh was worried about Olivier’s workload and onset of stage fright. The bores are believed to be the Lunts with whom Lilli Palmer’s husband Carlos had an unmotivated quarrel as he apparently had with so many others. The play Look After Lulu starred Vivien Leigh with its first night performance on July 29th 1959. This published book has a printed dedication of the play to Leigh by Coward. Additionally laid in is a printed card which reads: “With Mr. Noel Coward’s Compliments.†Former ownership signature whited-out on front flyleaf else a very good copy in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. Paul Robeson's copy signed by him on the pastedown. Robeson was a contemporary of Coward's and had great success in England after his 1928 performance in Show Boat where he established the definitive version of "Old Man River." Paul and his wife Essie first met Coward in 1926 probably introduced by their mutual friend Rebecca West. Essie's diaries reveal that she saw Coward a great deal during the winter of 1930-31 when he was the recipient of her woes about her marital difficulties with Robeson. "His attentions were evident from a letter Robeson wrote to Essie in January 1931: 'I had a talk with NC. We talked frankly as he said he knew all the facts. He was noncommittal and rightly so. After all his business with you is your concern not mine.' Robeson's biographer. Martin Duberman found 'no evidence of a sexual affair. Nonetheless the oblique reference in Paul Robeson's letter leaves the matter in doubt.' Bradbound. Fine copy in printed studio covers. The film was directed by Walter Lang and Frank Taschlin. With two 8’ x 10†black & white stills from the film - one showing all three Stooges and Edson Stroll as Prince Charming and the other of Stroll about to kiss the sleeping Carol Heiss as Snow White. Both stills are in uniformly fine condition with the one of Edson & Heiss showing two sets of very minor staple holes at the margin. This comic retelling of the classic fairy tale tells the story of an ice-skating Snow White who is forced to flee from her jealous stepmother played by Patricia Medina with the Three Stooges substituting for the Seven Dwarves.
