John Rowe Townsend describes as Noel Streatfeild's best-known and possibly her best pre-war book. The Circus Is Coming Townsend commends the detailed personal research which gives the book so much authenticity and compares it with Streatfeild's perceptive writing on family suggesting that the circus is a "super-family". 19235020n.p. 1923 1923. First edition. Quarto. 255x205mm. pp29 3bl. Beige wrappers the upper cover being the title page stapled at spine. Some soiling to covers and a small tear to the spine. Some internal marking but overall a very good copy of a highly entertaining satire in which Noel Coward takes aim at the Sitwells. Cleverly done by Coward even down to the errata slip and the list of other works by Whittlebot which includes Gilded Sluts and Haggis Re-visited. Coward also wrote a little play The Swiss Family Whittlebot in which Hernia appears with her brothers Gob and Sago. What with Coward's darts and F.R.Leavis's dig that: "the Sitwells belong to the history of publicity rather than of poetry" one almost feels sorry for the trio. n.p. [1923] unknown

It concerns a divorced couple who while honeymooning with their new spouses discover that they are staying in adjacent rooms at the same hotel. Despite a perpetually stormy relationship they realise that they still have feelings for each other. Its second act love scene was nearly censored in Britain as too risqué. Coward wrote one of his most popular songs "Some Day I'll Find You" for the play. Filmed several times for both movies and television the best known version is Sidney Franklin's 1931 film featuring Norma Shearer Robert Montgomery Reginald Denny and Jean Hersholt.
