NOEL NOUET 1885-1969: . He was a French artist painter designer and poet who lived in Japan. . In 1926 he went to Japan to work as a teacher at Shizuoka High School and in 1930 as a professor at the School for Foreign Languages in Tokyo. . He began to make drawings and sketches of Tokyo in his free time. Soon his drawings were published by the Japan Times. an English language newspaper in Tokyo. . More than two dozen of his designs were published in color woodblock format as Shin Hanga prints by Doi Publisher in the last half of the 1930s. . This book contains 50 drawings and sketches all are self-published privately by the author as offset lithographs. . The drawings were made from October 1945 -January 1946 others if dated are either 1945 or 1946. . It is amazing to think that Nouet could remain in Japan during the war under American persistent bombing. A good portion of the last part of the book is devoted to sketches of war damage burned out sections of the city and decimated areas after firelight. . These sketches are more than likely the first images drawn and published immediately after the end of World War II in August 1945. Just two months later Nouet some how appeared in Japan to continue his artistic impressions of damaged Tokyo and of the old monuments which remained from ancient times. . The value of Nouet's art work has steadily been increasing since his death. . This book is now seldom found in a complete state many were torn apart and sold as individual pages. . This book is complete with all 50 pages of drawings plus the author's 4 page English essay a list of each drawing. . A superb insight and perspective to the aftermath of Tokyo. . Color photos are posted to our website. . There was a paper flaw on drawing #11 which was mended on the verso ages ago otherwise the work is without issue. . . unknown

1936179525London: William Heinemann 1936. First editions first impressions signed by the playwright on the title pages of vols 1-2. The original production starred Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence and premiered on 9 January 1936 at the Phoenix Theatre London. This copy is from the theatre collection of Clive Hirschhorn b. 1940 who reviewed the collection in the Sunday Express and whose ownership inscriptions are pencilled on the front pastedowns dated 1988. Coward wrote these nine one-act plays to perform alongside Gertrude Lawrence. As Hirschhorn writes "though they did only two shows together - the superbly crafted Private Lives and Tonight At 8.30 - Coward's association with the 'imperishable' Gertie brought out the best in him and endures to this day". One of the plays Still Life was later adapted into the award-winning film Brief Encounter 1945. 3 vols octavo. Original blue boards spines lettered in gilt blue endpapers in vols 1 and 2. Spines faded discolouration to covers light foxing to edges and outer leaves toning to blue endpapers; jackets unclipped a few chips and creases abrasion to vol. 1 jacket rear panel generally bright: a very good set in like jackets.
