Slight browning to margins a little spotting otherwise very good. § The 6 plates and descriptive text for the entry of Arquebusier from volume 1 of plates. Plates are numbered 1-6. There is one double plate entitled Machine à Forer et à Alezer les Conons de Fusil and a single plate entitled Machine à Canceler. The last three plates are titled Arquebusier. There are some tears along the inside edge of page 3 and slight damage to the bottom edge of plate 1. Also with the relevant entries listed under Arquebuse in the Table Analytique et Raisonné du Dictionnaire des Sciences Arts et Métiers. In-4 (275 x 212 mm), broché, couverture de papier d'attente, 14 p. Edition originale. Publié une première fois en 1770, l’ouvrage connut deux éditions à la suite. La plus étendue, celle de 1780, fut condamnée par ce très sévère arrêt du Parlement de Paris du 23 mai 1781 comme "blasphématoire, séditieux, tendant à soulever les peuples contre l'autorité souveraine & à renverser les principes fondamentaux de l'ordre civil". Son auteur, Raynal, qui y est décrété d’arrestation, "appréhendé au corps, & amené ès prisons de la Conciergerie", choisit l’exil. L'interdiction valut une immédiate célébrité à l'auteur comme à l'oeuvre. La part de Diderot dans la rédaction de cet ouvrage a été largement réévaluée par la critique moderne. Cet arrêt amplement motivé constitue une véritable synthèse de la réaction politique, philosophique et morale, d'une partie des autorités et des "anti-lumières" aux nouvelles doctrines. Bon exemplaire, non rogné.

L'enciclopedia delle arti e dei mestieri di Diderot e D'alembert è un importante opera di riferimento per scoprire le arti ed i mestieri del XVIII secolo. La prima edizione risale al 1751 quando fu pubblicato il primo volume. L'opera continuò ad uscire per anni fino a raggiungere i 17 volumi di articoli scritti dai più autorevoli studiosi del tempo: Voltaire, Rousseau, D'Alembert, Marmontel solo per citarne qualcuno. Le planches vennero alla luce 11 anni dopo la prima edizione dell'enciclopedia, dal 1762 fino al 1772 raggiungendo gli 11 volumi. Worn uncut edges. The encyclopaedia of arts and jobs by Diderot and D'alembert is an important work of reference to discover arts and jobs in XVIII century. The first volume of the first edition was published in 1751. The work continued to be published until it got the 17 volumes of articles written by the most important scholars of that time: Voltaire, Rousseau, D'Alembert, Marmontel just to cite some of them. The planches began to sort out 11 years after the first edition of the Encyclopaedia, from 1762 to 1772 until getting to 11 volumes. That's why it is very difficult to find a complete encyclopaedia of Diderot.

There are three sets of plates under this section in volume I and these are titled Exercice 5 numbered plates Evolutions numbered plates 1-15 and Fortification 17 numbered plates with plate 8 divided over two sheets. In the Supplementary Plates Volume there are another five sets of plates and these are titled Tactique des Grecs 2 numbered plates both with a 4 inch vertical incision within the left margin Tactique des Romains 3 numbered plates Art Militaire des Turcs 3 numbered plates with one double plate Fortification 1 unumbered plate and lastly Nouvelle Artillerie 3 numbered plates with two double plates one of which is continued on a second sheet. Furthermore illustrations of a variety of fortifications canon catapults and battle plans help to make this a broad-ranging and fascinating study of the subject. A large amount of text accompanies this suite of plates describing military strategy exercises and other topics for instance the Roman military system. These include contributions by Charles-Louis de’Authville Des Amourettes Guilluame Le Blond and Chevalier Louis de Jaucourt the aristocrat who help fund the project and who wrote aroun d one quarter of the Encyclopédie. unknown books
