Text. franz. 1750 verfasste Diderot einen in ganz Europa verschickten Prospekt in dem er Interessenten zur Subskription der Encyclopédie aufrief. 1751 erschienen die beiden ersten Bände der «Encyclopédie.». Der buchhändlerische Erfolg des Werkes war enorm doch die Jesuiten und die Sorbonne diagnostizierten eine unchristliche Tendenz und erwirkten beim königlichen Kronrat ein Verbot. Da aber Madame de Pompadour die Mätresse von Ludwig XV. einige Minister viele einflussreiche Freimaurer und der Chefzensor Malesherbes auf der Seite der Encyclopédisten standen konnten 1753–1756 trotz des Verbots vier weitere Bände erscheinen.Danach jedoch wuchs der Druck der Gegner. 1758 wurde das Verbot erneuert 1759 setzte Papst Clemens XIII. das Werk auf den Index. Inzwischen hatte aber die Regierung die Deviseneinnahmen schätzen gelernt die trotz des Siebenjährigen Krieges 1756–1763 durch den Verkauf der Encyclopédie aus ganz Europa hereinkamen und man ermutigte Diderot unter der Hand zum Weitermachen. All manner of harnesses are displayed as are the many different tools used in their fabrication with two scenes of the craftsmen at work. The plates are the work of Goussier who was the main proponent for the plates volumes and who executed many of the designs himelf accompanying Diderot on almost all of his visits to ateliers and workshops. unknown books
