DJ spine and rear panel have some light soiling spine foot has been repaired with mending tape. Light foxing to text block edges. Interior toned but clean. First bolt roughly cut creating an uneven tear at top edge of half title and an extra fold to top edge of title page. Text in French. First published anonymously Diderot's first novel scandalized readers with the tale of a magical ring which bestows the genitals of women with the gift of speech speculated to be an orientalized depiction of Louis XV and his mistress Madame du Pompadour. For unspecified reasons Diderot did not venture further into this subject however he did make sure to portray Madame de Pompadour the mistress Louis XV in a flattering light most likely to ensure her support for his Encyclopedie – a support he received and in 1751 he together with D'Alembert published their seminal ‘Encyclopédie’. Originally published in 1748 this edition of Les Bijoux Indiscrets was published in Amsterdam in 1772 by Chez Marc-Michel Rey probably a pirated edition. A scarce edition: OCLC lists only two libraries with copies. <br> Contemporary mottled calf binding with worn gold edging gold flower pattern on spine. Octavo 389 pp plus a 3 page preface to Zima two parts published together in one volume with Table des Chapitres at end. Marbled paper pastedowns and free end papers front end paper missing. <br> Four copper plate illustrations - frontispiece title vignette and full-page plates tipped in opposite pages 12 and 113. <p> Spine missing about 1" at top including about half of title and 1 1/2" at base with some shallow insect holes in exposed portion. Edge wear and chipping to boards especially corners. Bottom corner of back board missing. Some scuffing particularly to back board. <br> Large dampstain across center of text block diminishing in size to center of book. Several pages of front and back matter have corners creased. Pages 125-9 have bottom corner folded over. All pages are present but pages 113 - 206 are loosely attached to or detached from binding. Signatures before and after are still sewn in.
