Very Good overall with slight sunning to spines a few head and tails slightly frayed especially Printing Plate case and foot of David Copperfield slight shelf wear a few spine labels slightly chipped. An attractive set. An attempt by renowned British private press The Nonesuch Press to create the definitive collection of the works of Charles Dickens with their signature fusion of technologies from different eras of publishing using hand press type and the original printing plates and wood blocks for many of the illustrations herein. The plates and wood blocks were then dispersed one per set creating a limitation of 877. The pleasant rainbow of colors by the bindings the thoroughness of the scholarship etc. made The Nonesuch Dickens an immediate hit with book collectors and it remains so to this day. With approximately 1000 illustrations with plates by Cruikshank Browne Leech et al. Title-pages printed in red and black. With many reproductions or the original parts wrappers on colored paper.<br/><br/>Volume I with an envelope signed by Dickens and an ALS by John Foster Dickens' biographer. On the first blank of volume I is a mounted small envelope addressed by Dickens to Edward Chapman his publisher and signed by Dickens on the lower left corner. Facing that page is a mounted autograph letter signed by John Foster Dickens' friend and biographer addressed to George Cattermole the artist who illustrated The Old Curiosity Shop. Foster letter is on stationery and is dated 21 September 1860. Two sixteenmo pages on one octavo sheet folded.<br/><br/>Set is uniformly bound by Riviere & Son in half brown levant morocco over brown cloth. Morocco double ruled in gilt. Spines lettered in gilt and compartments triple-ruled in gilt. Top edges gilt others uncut. Spines slightly sunned and some occasional minor rubbing and shelfwear. 1939146992N.p.: N.p. 1939. Draft script for the 1939 play. Carbon typescript on onionskin. With the name of actress May Hallatt in holograph ink on front wrapper and holograph annotations in pencil throughout. We could not verify her involvement in the 1939 production although it seems reasonable to infer from this script that the prolific stage and screen actress indeed had been possibly as stand-in for the role of Miss Havisham as many of the annotations in the script relate to that character.<br/><br/>In 1939 during a period of unemployment Alec Guinness with the aid of his wife artist playwright and actress Merula Sylvia Salaman began writing a stage adaptation of the 1861 Charles Dickens classic. Upon completion Guinness shared the manuscript with friends who decided to form an actor's cooperative the Actor's Company with the intention of putting on the production. It was also at this time September 1939 that Great Britain declared war on Germany commencing World War II.<br/><br/>The play premiered in December 1939 under the direction of George Devine at Rudolf Steiner Hall. Marius Goring performed the role of Pip with Martita Hunt as Miss Havisham Yvonne Mitchell as the young Estella Roy Emerton as Magwitch and Vera Poliakoff as the adult Estella. Guinness and Salaman sitting opposite one another on stage were the narrators as well as performing the roles of Herbert Pocket and Biddy respectively. The play received favorable reviews particularly from Sunday Times critic James Agate and did reasonably well but the strain of the war prevented it from moving to a larger theatre and the production as well as the Actor's Company went bust. <br/><br/>The following year a new production of Guinness' "Great Expectations" began but was then abandoned when Guinness refused to take part.<br/><br/>Guinness credits the play for having drawn him from the stage onto film. Upon Salaman's insistence an actress friend of hers Kay Walsh and her husband then thirty-one-year-old film editor David Lean saw the production which directly inspired Lean to take the story to the screen and make the classic 1946 film with Guinness and Hunt reviving their stage roles for the screen.<br/><br/>Brown titled wrapper. Title page present with credits for author Charles Dickens and playwright Alec Guinness. 122 leaves with last page of text numbered 34. Carbon typescript on onionskin stock rectos only. 19354698New York: Dodd Mead and Company 1935. 4to. Superbly bound by Albert Oldach accomplished American bookbinder who took over his father's bindery Frederick J. M. Oldach and Company in the early 1900's a successful bindery in Philadelphia that bound editions of Whitman and other notable authors in 19th Century. Exquisite full crushed dark blue morocco with bold gilt design and patterning on both covers and spine five raised bands gilt panels. Especially of note are the wonderful full morocco doublures much more elaborately tooled and than the covers and each with a central inlaid maroon morocco face large groupings of vine and blossoms including a central tree design and the front doublure with gilt Presentation: "George N. In gilt edged sealed mats 31 X 25 cm with BAC blindstamped logo in lower mat corner. One of an unknown number of sets of these seven original etchings of Dickensian scenes each signed in the lower margin in pencil by the artist. Burn 1862-1945 is known for his paintings and etchings of maritime and architectural studies. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists. Each of the etchings is captioned on the mat with the building identified and they include buildings identified with EDWIN DROOD DAVID COPPERFIELD PICKWICK PAPERS THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP as well as Dickens's birthplace etc. OCLC locates one complete set of these etchings which were originally accompanied by 4pp. of prelims at the HRC.
