Originally published in two series/three volumes "Chapman and Hall obtained the copyright of Sketches in 1837 they published all of them in twenty monthly parts from November 1837 through June 1839. Cruikshank designed a cover enlarged the plates and created 13 new illustrations for these monthly parts. In May 1839 Chapman and Hall published these parts complete in one volume with all 40 of Cruikshank's illustrations" Walter E. Smith Charles Dickens in the Original Cloth hence the "New Edition" referred to on the title page. Half title page has the "Vote for Spruggins" illustration full page drawing before title page has crowd waving to two gentlemen in a balloon indicative of first "one volume" edition published. ___DESCRIPTION: Half navy leather over marbled boards marbled endpapers and edges. Five raised bands on leather spine compartments 1 3 4 and 5 with gilt decorations compartment 2 red leather label with title in gilt compartment 6 gilt device of the head of a double-horned animal. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown of Francis George Dyne 1823-1882/4 the binding is likely custom for the family library as the horned animal at the tail of the spine is mirrored on the left above the field of the coat of arms. All 40 illustrations present but are heavily toned not affecting the text. Volume has been rebound by Bolton Knightsbridge per stamp on rear pastedown. Pagination: i-viii include the frontispiece pictorial title page standard title page advertisement and Table of Contents; 1-526. ___CONDITION: Overall near fine with a strong square text block solid hinges straight corners with no rubbing and other than the bookplate referred to above it is entirely free of prior owner markings. Boards are lightly rubbed there is some toning to the illustration pages minimal scattered foxing and one very small one-quarter inch tear to top of pg. 157. ___CITATION: Podeschi A7. Finely bound in 19th century full polished green calf spine lettered and decorated in gilt gilt turn-ins all edges gilt marbled endpapers. An excellent copy extremities lightly rubbed with the usual foxing and some staining to the plates text otherwise very clean and bright. A very attractive copy. Nicholas Nickleby is Dickens's third novel which he began writing while Oliver Twist was still in progress. Characteristic of Dickens's work Nicholas Nickleby is a whirlwind of social satire with a complex network of characters and plotlines. The book highlights the controversy that surrounded Yorkshire boarding schools in the 1830s as news stories brought to light the abuse and neglect that was common among these institutions known for accepting unwanted children from parents who paid high prices to send them anywhere they could. Dickens's villain Wackford Squeers was based on Walter Shaw the real-life headmaster of Bowes Academy one of the schools reported for allowing rampant abuse of its pupils. The book has since been adapted for theater television and film and remains one of Dickens's most well-known works. This first edition in book form was bound from the publisher's parts with the stab holes from the original wrappers present and all the points called for by Smith meaning that it is one of the earlier issues of the first edition. Furthermore this copy was bound from the earliest states of the publisher's parts for as Hatton and Cleaver note "There are two distinguishing features only which point out early printings from later issues:" the substitution of "visiter" for "sister" on page 123 and "latter" instead of "letter" on page 160; both of these errors were corrected while Nicholas Nickleby was issued in parts causing Smith to cite these points as "in some copies." This copy has both "visiter" and "latter" deeming it a scarce first edition bound from the first state of the publisher's parts. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. A CURIOUS DANCE ROUND A CURIOUS TREE

1860144211860. London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale pink wrappers. First Edition second and usual issue -- with the final paragraph in bold not like the rest of the text with the wrapper pink not mauve -- though all are today faded with the front cover title followed by a comma not by a period and with the front cover border decorative only at the corners not all 'round. Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital "established in 1751 for the treatment and care of lunatics" and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there dancing around the Christmas tree. He actually wrote the original piece in 1852 at which time it appeared in his Household Words Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913 when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up. It is here published in book form for the first time eight years later when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The hospital added two items to update the piece: an article about the 1860 Ball from the "Times" plus a brief article "Contrast between 1852 and 1860" in which the hospital asserts that many of the deficiencies cited by Dickens have since been addressed. The results of the initial mailing were not good -- which is why for this second issue the final paragraph the actual appeal was highlighted in bold. This is a fine copy of this very fragile item with scarcely any wear soil or foxing; as usual the pink wrappers have faded. Tipped to a corner of the inside front wrapper is an old but hyperbolic catalogue description. As with almost all copies there is a vertical crease because the booklet was folded vertically when the fundraising appeal was mailed out in narrow envelopes. Uncommon in this condition.
