Charles Dickens 1812-1870 was an extremely celebrated Victorian writer known for his works which document the social conditions of the time and his works are still immensely popular today. 'Martin Chuzzlewit' is a picaresque novel portraying the Chuzzlewit family and their selfishness satirically. 'Dombey and Son' is a novel following Paul Dombey a wealthy shipping company owner who is distressed by his lack of a male heir and rejects his daughter; this carries Dickensian themes of child cruelty deceit and social classes. 'Bleak House' tells the tale of Esther Summerson with a legal case at its centre. 'Nicholas Nickleby' is a novel centring on the eponymous character who must care for his family after the death of his father.These five volumes comprise Martin Chuzzlewit Nicholas Nickleby Dombey and Son Pickwick Papers and Bleak House.Profusely illustrated by H. K. Browne. In a half straight grain morocco binding. Externally a trifle rubbed in particular to extremities and the head and tails of all volumes with a little loss to the leather. Slightly oversize bound in dark green cloth with elaborate gold design including the busts of characters from his stories published by PF Collier in 1870. Covers uniformly worn--sligiht fraying at top and bottom of spine and tips of outer corners gold on spine barely legible slightly faded on covers; endpapers rather brittle is loose in one folume; binding starting split at front hinge in one volume; pages a little tanned due to age. Bindings are probabably a little weak due to age so books should be opened and used gently. HEAVY/OVERSIZE. An Attractive uniformly bound set of this very important body of works which includes I believe all of Dicken's Novels & the additional 'Christmas Stories' while he was still alive until 1863. All published dates are uniform. In other words there are no odd or out of place dates within the title runs. All are in Very Good to Near Fine condition with very little wear. All of these have the name 'Mary W Fuller' written in a neat hand in either pencil or pen on the first blank preceeding the front matter. Period yellow end papers remain bright and clean no marks what-so-ever. Likewise the bindings are also clean and crisp with lightly chipped and/or occasional small tears to the spine ends mostly on the tops. The overall appearance is quite lovely with the nearly perfect color matching A difficult task as these were published/printed by three different houses from 1861 through 1863. Many photos are available upon request. A Large & Heavy set which will require special packing and treatment for protection.
