In 8° (18,5x11,5 cm); 111, (1) pp. Brossura editoriale con titolo e fregio, entro ricca cornice al piatto anteriore. Qualche lieve difetto. Bellissimo frontespizio stampato in rosso e verde con arzigogoli viola. Esemplare ancora a fogli chiusi. Prima ed unica rarissima edizione, stampata con curatissima veste grafica dalla Società Tipografica Bolognese che nello stesso 1848 iniziò la sua attività letteraria, di questa tragedia scritta dal giureconsulto parmense, Paolo Tommasini. L’opera forse non venne mai distribuita per ragioni legate al tema dell’opera e alla situazione politica italiana del 1848, esiste infatti un solo esemplare censito in ICCU. La storia di Merope è quella della regina messena il cui marito, Cresfonte, e i due figli sono stati assassinati dal suo cognato, Polifonte, che usurpa il potere reale e tenta di forzare la regina a sposarlo. Questa storia della mitologia greca alla quale aveva già attinto Voltaire, era stata ripresa, da Scipione Maffei e Vittorio Alfieri in chiave nazionalistica in quanto era fin troppo semplice per il pubblico vedere in essa l'agognata tragedia nazionale da opporre all'egemonia francese. Anche la curiosa scelta della stampa del titolo in rosso e verde su sfondo bianco sembra richiamare direttamente i moti risorgimentali. Tommasini riprese le due opere di Scipione ed Alfieri, rielaborandole e rendendo i richiami nazionali ancor più espliciti. Opera rarissima ed importante per la storia dell’editoria risorgimentale bolognese dell’ottocento. Rif. Bibl.: IT\ICCU\PAR\1240640.
