1687H15862Paris: Chez Abouin Emery & Clousier 1687. Hardcover. Very Good. Early edition. 12mo original calf very good with handsome gilt spine; minor rubbing contents very clean. 365 pp. A Catholic theologian and historian he earned the respect of both Louis XIV and his court and of French Enlightenment figures. Voltaire thought this treatise on education one of the best works on the subject. The Traité du Choix et de la Méthode des Etudes made interesting and significant proposals for a radical reform of education in seventeenth-century France. It also included a survey of educational history that Monroe and Kandel considered as very likely the first general work on the history of education in Cyclopedia of Education 1913. Also appended in the author's Discourse on Plato. Chez Abouin, Emery & Clousier hardcover

Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Born at Lodève 26 June 1653; died at Paris 29 January 1742. He was a protégé of Cardinal de Bonzi and become chaplain to Maria Theresa in 16790 and to Louis XIV in 1683. He was appointed bishop of Fréjus in 1698 but resigned the see in 1715 when he received the Abbey of Tournus and was appointed tutor to the young Louis XV. Naturally cold and imperturbable he remained in the background during the regency. When Louis XV attained his majority in 1723 it was at the instance of Fleury that the Duc de Bourbon was made prime minister and quarrelling with the Duke Fleury pretended to retire to Issy. Louis XV however who admired and loved his tutor sent the Duke into exile and entrusted the government to Fleury. True to his habits of discretion and accustomed as Duclos says "to bridle the envious" he never assumed the title of prime minister. He was made cardinal in September 1726 and until his death remained the guiding spirit in French politics. E-001; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . hardcover
