Chrestiens printed 1694 first edition. 12mo contemporary vellum edges stained in brown. 6 175 11 248 pp. 2 volumes complete in one originally published separately in their first editions. Contemporary ownership signature to FFEP uniform natural darkening of the vellum tips show some light wear and short chip to head of spine some typical foxing very sound and square otherwise with unmarked internal text. 'Claude Fleury was an eminent French Historian and divine. He was educated in law at the College of Clermont and became a counsellor of the Parliament of Paris in 1658 but subsequently joined the priesthood and acquired a great reputation for learning. He was made member of the Academy in 1696 and in 1707 obtained from Louis XIV the priory of Argenteuil which he left in 1716 to become confessor to Louis XV. His reputation rests chiefly upon his Church History in twenty volumes evincing a great historiographical talent and written from a Gallican point of view.' McClintock & Strong. Backed with five raised bands. Decorative gilt on spine still visible as is title. Marbled page edges and endpapers. Some foxing here and there throughout. Otherwise a clean and tight book in very good condition. All text in French. Claude Fleury d.1723 was a French ecclesiastical historian. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Born at Lodève 26 June 1653; died at Paris 29 January 1742. He was a protégé of Cardinal de Bonzi and become chaplain to Maria Theresa in 16790 and to Louis XIV in 1683. He was appointed bishop of Fréjus in 1698 but resigned the see in 1715 when he received the Abbey of Tournus and was appointed tutor to the young Louis XV. Naturally cold and imperturbable he remained in the background during the regency. When Louis XV attained his majority in 1723 it was at the instance of Fleury that the Duc de Bourbon was made prime minister and quarrelling with the Duke Fleury pretended to retire to Issy. Louis XV however who admired and loved his tutor sent the Duke into exile and entrusted the government to Fleury. True to his habits of discretion and accustomed as Duclos says "to bridle the envious" he never assumed the title of prime minister. He was made cardinal in September 1726 and until his death remained the guiding spirit in French politics. E-001; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . hardcover
