Modern binding is superb clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction with assistance from J.D. Whitney Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans some partly colored are present and mainly in superb condition with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional far above average copy. 186859519NY: Wynkoop & Hallenbeck Printers 1868. Broadside 12 1/4 x 4 inches employing several sizes and styles of type. Gen. Tom Thumb and his colleagues had just returned to the United States following a three year tour of Europe "where they appeared before nearly all the Kings Queens Emperors and Nobility of the Old World!" Sylvester Bleecker Tom Thumb's publicity manager and a writer of vaudeville sketches used this general format for other broadsides advertising the troupe's return tour adapting the printing to the respective performances city to city. This broadside for Bath New York apparently unrecorded on OCLC which does locate a similar broadside at the State Library of Pennsylvania for a Harrisburg Pennsylvania performance and another at the Clements Library for a performance in Ann Arbor Michigan. Bound in black quarter leather with 5 raised bands to the spine. There is gilt embossed lettering and small decorative designs between the bands. Marbled boards and end papers. Numerous charts and tables throughout support the text. Text in French. Volume XXV - complete in its own right. There is light rubbing to the board corners and edges. There is some splitting to the front inner hinge between the half title page and title page revealing the cords and the half title page is a little loose. The front board remains firm and attached. There is a little rubbing to the head of the title page and a little staining to the head of the rear blank pages. A little normal age toning to the page periphery as expected for a book of this age. Carman providing the descriptions of the industry to the East and H. A. Heath and John Minto those to the West. This extensively-illustrated work fully documents the history of breeds in the United States the woolen industry from 1600 to 1800 the dissemination of Spanish Merino wool throughout New England and its eventual decline husbandry of the Middle and South Atlantic states Western Pennsylvania West Virginia Ohio Indiana Illinois Michigan Wisconsin Kentucky Tennessee Mississippi Alabama and Florida. Western states detailed are Montana the Dakotas Wyoming Colorado Utah Minnesota Iowa Nebraska Missouri Kansas Arkansas Texas New Mexico Arizona California Oregon and Washington. The work was prepared under the direction of D. E. Salmon Chief of the Bureau of Animal Industry. He writes in his letter of transmittal: "Taken as a whole this report can not fail to be interesting and valuable to every owner of sheep. It will give a broader view of the industry its magnitude and the methods which are most likely to bring success in conducting its various branches." The lithographs include breeds of sheep views of ranches and work scenes. Included are scenes of western and Texan sheep ranches.
