"The Tables Turned" A Letter to the Congregational Association of New York reviewing the Report of their committee on "The Relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery"

18551617The Congregational Association of New York established a committee to investigate and report on "The relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery". The report of that committee was made in 1855. The conclusions drawn are not clear for it had been the policy of the Society to not take any position on slavery since they believed it was not a proper religious issue. In any event one member of The Congressional Association wrote "The Tables Turned" -- A Letter to the Congregational Association of New York reviewing the Report of their committee on "The Relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery" By a Congregationalist Director taking issue with the procedures actions conclusions and writings of the Committee.This letter writer did not wish to identify himself other than by the nom-de-plume of A Congregationalist Director. He expressed his dissatisfaction however with words such as ".The facts are these: the chairman of your committee whose name alone would entitle it to general credit – never saw the report till weeks after your meting had been held and was absent from the meeting at which it was presented.And the further fact is stated without fear of contradiction that the acting chairman of your Committee whose multiform duties have required him to pass almost daily the door of the Tract house during the year of his appointment has in no instance within that period made an inquiry of any officer or Committee-man connected with the institution on any point embraced in the Report while there is indubitable internal proof in the document itself of a total lack of investigation of the public documents of the Society.".The letter is contained in a 44 pages string-bound booklet with a front paper cover but no rear cover that measures approximately 5 ¾ x 9 inches. The pages are tanned and there are pencil notes in the margins of a number of pages. The text is clear and easily read. There are markings on the front cover related to the prior ownership by the Western Reserve Historical Society Cleveland Ohio. The booklet is a first edition as published in Boston by Crocker & Brewster and in New York by Edward P. Rudd. Dated September 17th 1819 Doctor Dumanpan writes Monsiuer Mirbel Director General of the Ministry of the Interior advising the Minister that Madame Gensur is in need of government assistance as she is in failing health. Handwritten notes in the margin acknowledge the message has been circulated accordingly to the request. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS 1792-1872. Born in 1792 Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world" he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100000 books and at least 60000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars driven to distraction would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too by the presence of numerous logs a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life James Halliwell had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was in Sir Thomas' eyes the worst kind of criminal a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964 part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time. Autograph. Manuscript. Usual library treatments and stamps on lower spine front portfolio wrapper and blank sides of sheets. Light wear to extremities with some scuffing to surfaces. Binding is tight and sound. The atlas was originally bound with only the lower portion of Sheet V present; however a full Sheet V from another copy has been inserted loose thus completing the atlas. A couple of sheets have old edge repairs or short marginal tears. All plates are present and generally clean.Contents: Mercury was an important component for gold extraction used by miners during the gold rush years; it is a fortunate circumstance that significant deposits of cinnabar were found so close to the major California gold mining regions. The atlas contains color geological maps of the Clear Lake Sulphur Bank New Idria Steamboat Springs and New Almaden districts with many additional detailed sections and mine maps provided for the New Almaden district. This volume would make a nice addition to any collection of early California mining memorabilia gold rush material or geological library.In its earliest years the USGS except for topographic maps issued only three types of publications: annual reports bulletins and monographs. The monograph served as the preeminent publication series for the new Survey and was intended to provide specialists with a thorough and high-level treatment of subject matter backed by an extensive array of facts which supported the conclusions reached. Where necessary monographs were accompanied by magnificent map atlases published in elephant folio format that were typical of federal and some state geological surveys during the late 19th century period. Some monograph atlases – Eureka Leadville and Quicksilver among them - were published in advance of the text volume thus allowing the scientific community public and industry early access to accurate and detailed maps for other purposes. Beginning in 1890 the Professional Papers series began to displace the function of the Monograph series with full retirement of the Monograph series in 1929. The Survey would continue to publish large format atlases as part of the Geologic Atlas Folio series based on the standard quadrangle map; however folding pocket maps usually printed on thin paper would entirely replace the large format atlas as a report accompaniment following publication of the last monograph atlas in 1904.
