The publication is an issue of the of the promotional supplement to the German weekly Illustrierter Film-Kurier promoting the release of the 1931 re-released sound version of the 1925 American silent historical epic film "Ben Hur" directed by Fred Niblo and produced by MGM. The film starring Ramon Navarro in the titular role was the first full-length screen adaptation of Lew Wallace's successful 1880 novel and ended up being the most costly production of the silent era. The booklet is profusely illustrated throughout with gorgeous sepia-toned photogravure images and photomontage depicting scenes and characters from the film. 1927160884N.p.: N.p. 1927. Vintage photograph album containing 65 photographs compiled by cellist Carl Steppi between 1926 and 1927 documenting a tour with an orchestra in support of the 1925 film. A unique collection of vernacular photographs many with manuscript captions in English and German. Steppi is identified in contemporary newspaper articles as having been a cellist for the St. Louis Symphony in the early 1920s.<br /> <br /> The tour was apparently by rail as the archive includes several photographs of the assembled musicians outside train cars and one photograph of the musicians in a passenger car. The dates of the tour are noted on the album's first blank leaf captioned with "On the Road with the Picture 'Ben Hur' Goldwyn-Mayer Corporation / September 1926." The album's last leaf bears a photograph of presumably Steppi's wife and child captioned "Und endlich Kam die ersehnte Heimhehr! And finally the longed-for Homecoming! / Brooklyn N.Y. / Back in: April 24 1927." <br /> <br /> The many locations captioned in the photographs are: Illinois Dixon Rochelle and Rock Island Iowa Anamosa Cedar Rapids Clinton Davenport Des Moines Grinnell and Muskatine Kansas Wichita Missouri Kansas City and Hannibal Ohio Zanesville Texas Austin Dallas and Gainesville and West Virginia Charleston and Huntington with Gainesville incorrectly noted as being in Oklahoma.<br /> <br /> Jewish prince Ben-Hur is sent to prison at the behest of his childhood friend Messala as a result of a mishap during a Roman parade. 19014All three on letterheads of the Water Pollution Research Laboratory Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Stevenage Hertfordshire. 16 July and 9 and 23 August 1963. Five items: Southgate's three letters and carbons of two of Samson's replies 17 July and 10 August 1963. The five are all in good condition on lightly aged paper. Southgate's first letter 16 July 1963; 1p. 12mo accepts Samson 'invitation to give a paper' and discusses the question of the title: 'We are concerned here with the prevention of pollution and the study of its effects in surface waters and my paper would deal mainly with that side of the question rather than with the treatment of water as carried out by a water undertaking. It is of course a fact that pollution has a very great bearing on the suitability of water as the raw material for a supply but as I say I think I should be concerned mainly with the prevention of this pollution rather than with its elimination at a water works.' In the carbon of his reply of 17 July Samson states that the Society's Council will be happy to 'fall in' with Southgate's wishes but that they 'also had in mind the question of fluoridation'. Southgate returns to the problem of the title in a 29-line letter of 9 August 1963 which also discusses possible chairmen for the lecture. He rules out as 'not quite appropriate' Samson's suggestion of the Minister of Health: 'the Minister mostly concerned with water supplies and prevention of pollution is the Minister of Housing and Local Government. I think however that to ask him would be flying too high.' His two suggestions are C. H. Spens and Professor J. Proudman. In the carbon of his reply of 10 August Samson returns to the question of the title 'I appreciate your problem as it is one about which lecturers often have difficulty.' and gives four suggestions. On 23 August Southgate writes to inform Samson that he is accepting one of the suggestions 'Prevention of Water Pollution - the Present Position'. The autograph note without place or date. The two typed notes in good condition lightly aged; the autograph note in fair condition on aged paper. Two items signed 'Bernard Miles' and one 'B. M.' The first typed note suggests an exchange of material with the autograph postscript 'One or two of the appeals for charity are endorsed by H. I. Henry Irving himself.' The second typed note declines a collection: 'I managed to pick up an almost complete set in Leeds soon after we talked - nearly 200'. The autograph note simply acknowledges the sending of a cheque for a 'little lot of photographs I took away'. Also present is a carbon copy of one of Duncan's bills to Miles dated 27 March 1948. One typed note (28 September 1948) on letterhead of Duff House, Acacia Road, London, NW8, the other on letterhead of the Mermaid unknown
