In addition to acting as editor of the works of his colleague James Clerk Maxwell Niven was the teacher of one of the greatest mathematicians and philosophers of the twentieth century Alfred North Whitehead. The item is from the papers of the presumed recipient Mrs Evelyn Julia Allan of the Chelsea Red Cross. 2pp 12mo. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Signed ‘W. D. Niven’ and addressed to ‘Dear Mrs Allen’. He was pleased to receive her letter ‘reminding me of old times’ but he had not forgotten her as he has ‘sometimes heard Dr. J. M Bruce speak about you & your family’. He has ‘of course’ often heard about her brother and is ‘glad to know that his children are such fine little fellows’. He is sorry that he can only give one vote to her candidate. ‘The other - I have only two - I must give to Mrs Fuller’s’. Although the film was a critical and financial disappointment at the time of release it garnered several prominent fans including Jacques Lacan who purportedly used it in psychoanalysis classes as an example of the paranoid mind. A rolled poster i.e. no folding creases in Fine condition approximate size is 23.5 inches by 16 inches standard Finnish A2 format. With minor signs of use: one very short tear to right edge and similar to bottom edge neither immediately noticeable. Minor print-soiling to verso where there is also a small pen inscription of film-title and date. Minor handling creases to the corners and some minor dings along the left edge of the poster suggesting that it may have been mounted with clips - there are neither pin-holes nor tape residue marks. In fantastic clean condition otherwise Fine or better. Artist-signed in the plate. A small archive of approximately 75 leaves largely regarding Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios belonging to Coppola's long-time producer Fred Roos 1976-1989. <br /> <br /> The majority of the archive dates from the early 1980s with a substantial amount of material dedicated to the acquisition of General Service Studios in Hollywood for the short-lived Zoetrope Studios production facilities in 1980 sold in 1984 as well as copies of letters to Marlon Brando Gary Marshall and Roddy McDowall an autograph letter signed from Roddy McDowall to Coppola various press announcements including one for the 1981 film "One from the Heart" and one for the 1982 film "Hammett" as well as various other business documents and proposals.<br /> <br /> The archive includes:<br /> <br /> An autograph letter signed from Roddy McDowall on McDowall's letterhead dated March 27 1976 genially inquiring about working with Coppola and his newly formed company Coppola Cinema 7 with a Xerographic copy of Roo's agreeable response to McDowall stapled to the top left corner of McDowall's letter on Coppola Cinema Seven letterhead dated April 10 1976 written on behalf of Coppola who was working in the Philippines on "Apocalypse Now" at the time. <br /> <br /> A substantial press kit announcing the formation of Zoetrope Studios in 1980 and the acquisition of General Service Studios in Hollywood. Included in the press kit are four vintage black and white film still photographs and 21 pages of production information. <br /> <br /> Shot on location with only four cameras in London's Odeon theater on July 3 1973 the film witnesses Bowie's final performance as Ziggy Stardust. It would remain unreleased save a scant handful of partial screenings for another ten years as the audio recordings from the event were so poor that the filmmakers did not want to use them. Only in the early 1980s did Bowie rerecord a number of post-production tracks when he felt that he had finally put enough distance between himself and his Ziggy Stardust persona. <br /> <br /> 21 pages of production information corner stapled 8.5 x 11 inches. A remarkable apparently un-used Finnish A2 cinema-foyer poster for the celebrated Soviet-era World War 2 movie Zhivyje i mjortvyje known in English as The Alive and the Dead. Now acknowledged as a masterpiece the film attracted huge audiences on its release. The film was first screened in cinemas in Finland in November 1964 with no subsequent theatrical runs. This poster is not a modern reproduction or reprinting and nor is it Video/DVD-related. This particular poster is a standard size 60cm x 40cm approx and was printed by Rotapaino Oy dated 1964. It is in Very Fine to Mint un-used condition - unfolded free from pinholes or other signs of use. This is a rare poster in any condition but to find such a perfect example is a minor miracle. As usual the Finns have done their own thing with the layout and design but the graphics are effective and beautiful. Exceptionally clean and bright. A very nice example of vintage movie advertising art and design in outstanding condition and a very rare cinema poster.
