1931003116Berlin: Nero-Film A. G. 1931. Original vintage German publicity photo of PETER LORRE in the legendary film classic "M" directed by Fritz Lang. Berlin: Nero-Film A. G. 1931. This stunning image shows Lorre as the murderer confronted by the blind balloon seller who recognizes his distinctive whistle thus setting Lorre's capture in motion. Exceedingly rare photo recently found in an old untouched US archive having originated as an oversized German negative which was re-purposed for use in Denmark as evidenced by the Danish Film Censor's mark "statens" at the bottom which is baked into the negative and then presumably arrived here as a collector's rarity . Glossy single-weight roughly 8" x 10" gelatin silver print. It shows overall wear from handling and it has many faint creases plus stains on reversewhich do not bleed through to the front yet retains eye appeal. "M" remains one of the most famous films of world cinema. It provided the initial blueprint for the entire genre now labeled psychological thriller. "M" original posters sell from $15000 to $50000. Here's a chance to own a piece of the same cinema history at a small fraction of the cost. . First Thus. Very Good. Photograph. Nero-Film A. G. books

18551617
The Congregational Association of New York established a committee to investigate and report on "The relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery". The report of that committee was made in 1855. The conclusions drawn are not clear for it had been the policy of the Society to not take any position on slavery since they believed it was not a proper religious issue. In any event one member of The Congressional Association wrote "The Tables Turned" -- A Letter to the Congregational Association of New York reviewing the Report of their committee on "The Relation of the American Tract Society to the Subject of Slavery" By a Congregationalist Director taking issue with the procedures actions conclusions and writings of the Committee.

This letter writer did not wish to identify himself other than by the nom-de-plume of A Congregationalist Director. He expressed his dissatisfaction however with words such as ".The facts are these: the chairman of your committee whose name alone would entitle it to general credit – never saw the report till weeks after your meting had been held and was absent from the meeting at which it was presented. And the further fact is stated without fear of contradiction that the acting chairman of your Committee whose multiform duties have required him to pass almost daily the door of the Tract house during the year of his appointment has in no instance within that period made an inquiry of any officer or Committee-man connected with the institution on any point embraced in the Report while there is indubitable internal proof in the document itself of a total lack of investigation of the public documents of the Society.".

The letter is contained in a 44 pages string-bound booklet with a front paper cover but no rear cover that measures approximately 5 ¾ x 9 inches. The pages are tanned and there are pencil notes in the margins of a number of pages. The text is clear and easily read. There are markings on the front cover related to the prior ownership by the Western Reserve Historical Society Cleveland Ohio. The booklet is a first edition as published in Boston by Crocker & Brewster and in New York by Edward P. Rudd. The booklet is in good condition

The illustrations accompanying this description show the booklet's front cover the first page of text and a typical 2-page spread of further text.
Crocker & Brewster and Edward P. Six items relating to Pulman's arbitration including 'a careful breakdown by him of scene continuity of the Bourguignon script the Duncan script and the final shooting script' these three breakdowns Items Two to Four below totalling 8pp. In his four-page arbitration Pulman gives a detailed account of the process of the film's composition of all the more interest as coming from a master screenwriter and contemporary. All six items in good condition lightly aged. ONE: Carbon copy of Pulman's signed four-page 'Arbitration - "GIRL ON A MOTORCYLE" Writers involved - S. Bourguignon Ronald Duncan Jack Cardiff Gillian Freeman'. A full description of the case in fourteen numbered sections giving a great deal of detail regarding the composition of the script beginning with a list of six 'writing stages' and Pulman's reasons for reaching his conclusion. He describes the film as 'a story done very much in the style of “Un Homme et Une Femme†using a very similar continuity of flashback and throught sic track'. On reading through the material presented to him Pulman found that 'one impression emerged clearer than ever – that the final shooting script 6 differed very little from Bourguignon's adaptation which Cardiff says could “never be used on a professional basis.†To see whether this impression was correct or not I made a careful breakdown of scene continuity of the Bouguignon script the Duncan script and the final shooting script and compared them. These are enclosed with this opinion.' The are Items Two to Four below. He does not 'believe that anyone comparing these breakdowns could come to any conclusion other than that the screenplay credit belongs niether sic to Cardiff nor Duncan but solely to Bourguignon'. Since Bourguignon 'seems to be claiming no credit' he proposes to amend the credit to: 'SCREENPLAY by S. Bourguignon. Additional Scenes by Ronald Duncan and Jack Cardiff.' TWO: Two-page typescript headed 'Continuity - BOURGIGNON sic'. Twenty-four points beginning with 'Rebecca rises from her husband's bed puts on her black suit takes her motorcycle and sets off to see her lover Daniel.' Last point: '24. She leaves the cafe and gets on her motor cycle again. She is going very fast. She is killed in a collision.' THREE: Three-page typescript headed 'Ronald DUNCAN - Continuity. Second Draft'. Twenty-seven numbered points beginning with: '1. Rebecca rises from her husband's bed takes her black suit and motorcycle and sets off for her lover.' Last point: '27. She leaves the grass verge and drives on. She arrives at Daniels. He is not present but she sees the photo frame this time with the woman in it which is sic obviously always takes out when he visits her. She walks out of his life leaving the motor cycle there.' FOUR: Three-page typescript headed 'Continuity - Final Script Jack Cardiff'. Thirty-one points beginning with: '1. Rebecca asleep with her husband has a dream about him and Daniel.' Last point: '31. She leaves the grass verge and gets back on the road again. Thinking of Daniel she has a collision with a car and is killed.' FIVE: Copy of typed 'postscript to my opinion dated 29th April 1968' by Pulman. On his letterhead. Dated 6 May 1968. 1p. 4to. Amending his proposed credit following a discussion 'at some length with Dick Sharples' to 'Screenplay by - RONALD DUNCAN Adapted by - JACK CARDIFF'. An interesting item casting light on the way business was conducted in the world of nineteenth-century newspaper proprietorship. 4pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Folded for postage. The recipient evidently a fellow newspaper proprietor is not named and the letter is signed ‘William Ingram’. Begins: ‘My dear Sir / I have talked over the matter of purchase of your papers with my brother and he is of the opinion that our deal ought to include the 3d gardener’s paper as the two have always been worked together - he thinks ten years purchase less 10% would be a fair price - the 10% would cover all commission and cost of audit examination etc - this would give you a clear 9 years’ purchase’. In Ingram’s opinion the recipient ‘would do well to realise as in these days of never ending competition the older one gets the more difficult it is to tackle the worry of these incessant attacks’. For his own part he would not ‘undertake any new ventures’ if he did not have ‘young sons to help me’. 3 November 1899; 198 Strand, W.C. Serge Diaghilev 1872-1929 was the founder of the Ballets Russes a troupe that revolutionized modern design fashion and theater and is widely regarded as the most influential ballet company of the 20th Century. It performed first in Paris in 1909 at the Palls Garnier with overwhelming success. Diaghilev himself was skeptical about ballet at times referring to the dancers as "a herd of cattle." Diaghilev's success however was based on his idea to combine dance music and visual arts including set design and costumes with Leon Bakst as the artistic director of the Ballet Russes. Key to the tremendous success of the Ballets Russes was the mix of traditional ballet with show elements that way making it more appealing to the general public and influential in contemporary art at the same time.

After Diaghilev's death in 1929 his property was claimed by his creditors and in 1931 Wassily de Basil a Russian émigré and René Blum ballet director at the Monte Carlo Opera founded the Ballets Russes de Monte-Carlo. Its first performance was given in 1932 at the Monte Carlo Opera. David Libidins, Independent Booking Office unknown
