The Geneva - Thomson text of the New Testament revised by Thomson from the translation by Whittingham Gilby Sampson and others. First printed in 1576 Thomson's revision eventually became the final and most popular version of the Geneva text. The edition of the Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins was first published in its complete form in 1562 and was frequently reprinted often to be bound to accompany other editions of the Bible. Cambridge: Pr. by John Archdeacon 1785. 8vo. 64 ff.<br>Â Â Â Â This striking 18th-century set owned by a wealthy Englishwoman who spent much of her life in Switzerland for more on which see below pairs a handsome Cambridge Bible and BCP in => masterfully designed and executed deluxe matched bindings. The Bible opens with a frontispiece engraved by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman; the Apocrypha are present in this copy and the New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1776. The BCP is bound with Companion to the Altar "Note This Book is bound up with the Common-Prayers of several sorts printed by the University of Cambridge" as per the title-page; Sternhold & Hopkins bring up the rear.<br>Â Â Â Â Bindings: Contemporary mottled green morocco covers framed in Greek key roll and dentelles composed of urn and flower motifs surrounding central JHS medallions with red morocco inlays and gilt-tooled flames; spines with gilt-tooled compartment decorations Bible spine with gilt-stamped red leather title-label. While the covers of the two volumes are strongly similar overall and "read" as => identical on first glance the details of the design vary slightly between the Bible and the BCP as the size disparity and possibly the time gap between the publication dates necessitated the use of different tools. The spine designs differ more notably but still most companionably with the Bible's spine decorations being built up with foliate and floral motifs and the BCP's with suns and stars. => To engage in minute comparison of these bindings' detail is an entrancing exercise.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front free endpaper of Bible used for family record: Francis James Barwell de Sandol Roy born in 1793 and died in 1813 "Quel angoisse!"; Henri Guillaume de Sandol Roy born in 1797; and a list of grandchildren: François Sophie Anna and Alfred. The title-page inscription confirms that this set was owned by Sophie Bridget Barwell de Sandol Roy 17691850 daughter of William Barwell a director of the East India Company; her brother Richard became a famously wealthy and scandalous nabob. Dubbed "la belle Anglaise" following her arrival in Neuchâtel Sophie made a great splash in Swiss society and received a proposal from Colonel François Isaac de Sandol Roy sometimes given as Sandol-Roy a proposal which she at first rejected until he subsequently saved her from the guillotine in revolutionary Paris! For more on their story please see Musée Neuchatelois 1923 ed. pp. 24 which includes a reproduction of a portrait of Sophie de Sandol-Roy done by Sir Joshua Reynolds. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Bible: Darlow & Moule 1247; ESTC T88808. Darlow and Moule suggest that this edition was actually printed in early 1633 as a number of copies are recorded as having their title-page dates altered by hand to read 1633 as is the case here.<br>Â Â Â Â The Apocrypha are present with the blank space on the last page of Malachi filled with an early inked "account of the several books in the Apocrypha." => The Psalter following the Bible includes music. The O.T. title-page is engraved and signed very faintly in this example by William here "Guilielmus" Hole and is framed by an elaborate architectural border displaying the coats of arms of the 12 tribes of Israel and portraits of the 12 Apostles. => The recto of the list of books is a full-page engraving of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden surrounded by animals. The New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1632 with an ornate wood-engraved border featuring Justice and Truth along with the British lion and unicorn and various architectural motifs.<br>Â Â Â Â The volume opens with two fly-leaves bearing genealogical records in several different early inked hands with dates ranging from 1743 through 1847. A characteristic gathering of the three texts the Bible being the Geneva-Tonson-Junius version in an edition that is a very close reprint of Barker's 1607 edition. The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. The continental binding on this small format Authorized version MAY suggest that it might be a pirated edition of the English Bible pirated in Amsterdam. Noted for its excellent illustrations by several contemporary American engravers including Alexander Anderson Cornelius Tiebout Francis Shallus and William Rollinson this large and handsomely produced lectern-sized folio Bible is printed in two columns with sidenotes including scriptural cross-references and a chronology. The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. New Testament ONLY. 1 f. pp. 7891012; 19 plts. <br><br>Present here is the extracted New Testament from => the first folio Bible printed in America from the press of the printer whom Ben Franklin called the "Baskerville of America." Being also only the fourth complete Protestant Bible in English printed in the former British colonies its text is the standard King James version printed in double-column format in roman type; and Thomas's production is famous for its typography its achievement in size the pages are 15.5" tall and especially its illustrations. The plates 19 of them were engraved by four of America's greatest artisans: J. Norman Alexander Doolittle Joseph H. Seymour and Samuel Hill.<br>Â Â Â Â "An alphabetical table of proper names" was planned but not printed as indicated by the catchword on the final page; the table does appear in the quarto edition Thomas printed the same year. This volume does contain at its end the whole Bible's "Index to the Holy Bible" and its several "tables" of Weights Measures and Coins; Time; Offices and Conditions of Men; and Kindred and Affinity. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Hills 29; O'Callaghan 38; Herbert 1353; Rumball-Petre Rare Bibles 171; Evans 23186 Wright Early Bibles of America pp. 7488. 18th-century mottled calf nicely rebacked with edges of boards renewed and text block resewn. Old waterstaining from light to severe throughout extending across text and image areas of plates with very variable impact; age-toning occasional staining and off-setting from plates in only the usual degrees. Lower margins display some notable chips and purposeful paper tear-aways and a good many closed tears; only the latter reach sometimes into text without loss. Several plates have had closed tears neatly repaired from the rear; the plate of Mary Magdalen and the final leaf of the last Table show OLD replacement of paper where original paper was torn away from blank areas; the copy retains the old dog-earings and page-creasings of long use and bears pencillings on its final leaf. => A copy that has seen much happen to it over its more than 200 years of existence; still a sturdy interesting and imposing copy of this impressive early American New Testament. Original advertising herald for the US release of the 1927 film a shortened 115 minute version re-cut by American playwright Channing Pollock who is credited on the herald. <br/><br/>Interestingly the herald credits the film as joint production of Paramount and UFA apparently just prior to the formation of the larger umbrella production company Parufamet which included UFA Paramount and MGM. <br/><br/>4.5 x 6 inches folded 8.75 x 6 inches unfolded. Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp. <br><br>When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences.<br>Â Â Â Â As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the fourth edition "wherein are many grosse absurdities corrected." A portrait of William Fulke precedes the engraved title-page both done by William Marshall. Harriet Boyd Hayward is a fashion designer who partners with Teddy Dailey whom she loves and Sam Jaffe and starts a new business dedicated to selling affordable women's dresses. A rival fashion company lead by Noble Sanders momentarily distracts Harriet but at the last minute she realizes her true devotion to Teddy and Sam. <br/><br/>Screenwriter Polonsky was blacklisted shortly after the film's release refusing to answer questions before the House Un-American Activities Committee. <br/><br/>White titled wrappers rubber-stamped as REVISED FIRST DRAFT CONTINUITY on the front wrapper copy No. 3 and production No. 2446.8 dated August 4 1950. In this hypothetical casting Tony-winning Broadway actor Jose Ferrer assumed the role of Bob Acres a buffoonish country suitor to young Lydia played by Laura Hope-Crews. From the estate of actor Monte Blue who starred in the film. <br/><br/>Included in the archive are a carbon typescript draft script here under the working title "Southern Skies" four vintage photographs each with a mimeo snipe on the verso one with a press stamp as well and a later 1921 edition of the 1919 travel book by Frederick O'Brien which served as the source material for the film signed and dated by Blue with his bookplate on the front pastedown. <br/><br/>MGM's first film with a fully prerecorded soundtrack comprised of music and sound effects including most notably the first time the company's mascot Leo the Lion roared at the film's start White Shadows in the South Seas doesn't quite classify as a "talkie" as only the single whispered word "hello" appears in the soundtrack. Hinkley 1923. 8vo. 14 vols. 70 plts. <br><br>This handsome and much-sought edition of the King James Bible was printed at the Merrymount Press and limited to 2574 sets: 1000 on wove paper 1000 on laid paper 488 on handmade paper and 86 on Japan paper. This set is #233 printed on handmade paper and contains 70 fine plates usually 5 per volume and mostly photogravures after paintings. The edition was designed for smooth reading and the text is set in ordinary paragraphs without chapter and verse numbers.<br>Â Â Â Â This work has a complicated and as yet not fully explained printing history. It was probably first printed in 1904 with sheets reissued or reprinted at various times in the subsequent two decades. Even the name of the publisher on the title-page varies; "The Grolier Society" sometimes appears in place of Hinkley.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's quarter tan pigskin spine leather over deeply grained polished bare wooden boards with bevelled edges on the three outer sides in the style of incunable and 16th-century books. Raised bands on spines; spine panels tooled and lettered in blind. Unusual and attractive. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Smith 209; Hills 2155 for the 1904 edition and explanation of reissues. Name of uncredited crew member David Dyer and "filming 12-18-72" on top right of each script in holograph ink. With holograph ink annotations to the credits of "Part 1."<br/><br/>Dan Curtis creator of the popular ABC vampire soap opera "Dark Shadows" 1967-1971 adapted and produced this version of the classic Mary Shelley 1818 novel with "Dark Shadows" screenwriter Sam Hall penning "Part 1" and screenwriter Richard Landau penning "Part 2."<br/><br/>Curtis' "Frankenstein" is a fairly faithful adaptation shot with television broadcasts cameras in Curtis' gothic soap opera style with a memorable performance from Bo Svenson as the monster.<br/><br/>Though well received when aired it was overshadowed by the Universal Television production "Frankenstein: The True Story" which aired in late 1973 on NBC. <br/><br/>"Frankenstein - Part 1"<br/>Red titled wrappers. The photographs numbered on the versos in holograph pencil detail costumes for starring actors Marina Vlady and Jean Marais an exhibit of film stills and costume designs at a bookshop called "Lavocat" costumes displayed at tge shop "Delvaux" and the ephemera consists of a press packet detailing film credits and biographies an invitation for two to the premiere on March 26 at the Marivaux cinema a small slip with annotations in holograph ink and a carbon typescript from Maryse Martres to "Madame Armon" at Delvaux regarding the costumes. Housed in a large manila folder. <br/><br/>Based de La Fayette's 1678 anonymously published novel France's first historical novel widely regarded as an early psychological novel. The Princess marries a much older prince Marais but yearns for a handsome duke Poron. Her fidelity eventually coming into question. Marais also starred in Delannoy's and Cocteau's other collaboration "Love Eternal" 1943. Delannoy directed over 50 films at first well-regarded dissipating at the end of his career with several B-grade films. Costuming for the film was produced by Pierre Cardin and Marcel Escoffier both also worked together on "Beauty and the Beast" 1946 and "Fernandel the Dressmaker" 1956. <br/><br/>Martres Martin was a prolific French actress since 1948 notably "Girl on the Third Floor" 1955 and "The Happy Road" 1957 and she was later involved in press relations at Cinedis a notable film agency in operation since the Silent Film era. Kishi was born in 1932 and became a Japanese actress and writer. She married director Ciampi in 1957. Since 1996 she has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund UNFPA. The Delvaux shop has been producing leather goods mostly handbags since the 19th century with central locations in Belgium. <br/><br/>Photos range from 6.75 x 9 inches to 7.25 x 10.5 inches.
