Contemporary three quarter calf and cloth. Illustrations. Binding extremities rather worn but sound foldout 'example plate c' torn up one fold without loss closed tear and small spot in lower margin of plate 18 some tanning and scattered occasional foxing some cross-plate offsetting otherwise a good sound copy. An early American printing of a great many through the remainder of the 19th century based on the London edition of 1853. An extensive treatment of basic mechanical drawing is followed by directions for the more refined skills of shading perspective etc. The plates detail all manner of geometric mechanical and architectural renderings to assist the draughtsman in his work. A sequence of 'example' plates at the end include renderings of an express locomotive a wood planing machine a washing machine a power loom steam boilers direct- acting marine engines etc. Stringer & Townsend hardcover books

Frontis. 768 pp.; 10 plts. <br><br>One of the Phinneys' series of stereotyped quarto Bibles of which 138 editions were published between August 1822 and winter 1848. The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop for fun Hills 69. The younger Phinneys however were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York.<br>Â Â Â Â The New Testament here has a separate title-page and the volume is llustrated with 10 wood engraved plates including two frontispieces. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Hills English Bible in America 972. Contemporary sheep gilt-lettered on the spine. Binding rubbed with abrasions along edges and joints spine pulled at head. Ex-library with white-lettered shelf number on spine. Light foxing. Starring actors including Marais and Vlady are seen in lavish period costumes designed for the film by Marie-Claude Fouquet and Jacqueline Guyot. Housed in a light blue mailing envelope with annotations on the recto in manuscript ink noting contact information for Fouquet and Guyot. <br /> <br /> Based de La Fayette's 1678 anonymously published novel France's first historical novel widely regarded as an early psychological novel. The Princess Vlady marries a much older prince Marais but yearns for a handsome duke Poron. Her fidelity eventually coming into question. Marais also starred in Delannoy's and Cocteau's other collaboration "Love Eternal" 1943. <br /> <br /> Two transparencies 3.25 x 4.5 inches one slightly larger. 1972CNFBV03New York: E. P. Dutton and Company Inc 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Oblong quarto 40 pp. Caldecott Medal winner. Based on a story by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn 1850-1904;born in Greece raised in Ireland at the age of 19 he emigrated to the United States spending time in Cincinnati and New Orleans. He eventually traveled for work newspaper reporting to the West Indies and thence to Japan where he found his true home. He married Setsuko Koizumi who was from a Samurai family; they had four children and Hearn fully immersed himself into Japanese culture. He and his wife would travel around Japan gathering the old folk tales which he translated; they were immediately popular and would eventually delight generations. This tale is of a "funny little woman" who goes chasing after a runaway dumpling laughing all the way only to find herself cooking with a magic paddle for the wicked "oni" that live underground. Illustrated by Blair Lent 1930-2009 who is probably best known for his Asian folklore inspired work; this volume was the winner of the 1973 Caldecott Medal.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Original green cloth with a dark-green illustration to the upper board title stamped in dark-green to backstrip illustrated title page fully illustrated throughout in colour; oblong quarto size 9.25" by 9.75" 40 unnumbered pp. first edition. In the original pictorial dust jacket which shows the price of $5.95 summary of the book on the front flap author and illustrator bios on the back flap Caldecott Medal on the front panel back panel illustration which mirrors the design on the front board.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: A near fine copy the binding is clean and without wear the corners are straight and unrubbed the hinges are strong internally bright and free of prior owner markings; a slight lean to the spine else fine. The unclipped dust jacket is very good with several short closed tears some with old cello tape on the verso from a prior owner and minor overall edgewear; the colours are bright the cream background just lightly toned.
