Papers cluster around two topics: the writing of Langland and Chaucer, and writing as historical process. These reflect Frank's own wide-ranging work. The papers contain a refreshing ideological diversity while maintaining coherence of intellectual concerns. There is a discussion of the working of memory in The Knights Tale. On debt, on Langland's Christology and on revelry, some very interesting ideas are put foward. In addition, literary contexts for the two major poets are usefully and thoroughly mapped out, and three papers illustrate how historical events and processes may be perceived in stimulatingly different ways. Included is an introduction from the editor and bibliography of Robert Worth Frank, Jnr. Contributors: ELIZABETH KIRK, C. DAVID BENSON, ANNA BALDWIN, M. TERESA TAVORMINA, MONICA McALPINE, MARY CARRUTHERS, KATHRYN L. LYNCH, CAROLYN P. COLLETTE, MARY HAMEL, PAUL STROHM, THOMAS J. HEFFERMAN, PEGGY KNAPP; 219 pages

Very light foxing to textblock else Fine. ; 288 pages; This remains the major book on Aeschylus' Supplices, its dating and the trilogy to which it belonged. Its first appearance, in 1969, was a response to the publication of a papyrus fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt, which indicated a late production date (the 460s BC) for Aeschylus' play. This upset the previous consensus that it was the earliest Greek tragedy to survive: there was, Garvie argued, no longer good reason to suppose that the play belonged to an early stage in its author's development. The book also examines the evidence for reconstruction of the other, lost plays of the trilogy. Garvie remains convinced that, even without the additional testimony of the papyrus, all the internal from the text of the play points to the 460s, though some have tried to pull it back to the 470s because it feels like an early play. Some of the salutary lessons to be drawn from the discovery of the papyrus have still to be learnt.

Light foxing to prelims. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 241 pages; Plautus' Casina is a lively and well composed farce. The plot, which concerns the competition of a father and his son for the same girl and the various scurrilous tricks employed in the process, gives full scope to Plautus' inventiveness and richly comic language. The editors' aim is to establish the play as one of the liveliest of ancient comedies, and in their introduction and notes to make the reader continually aware of the conditions of an actual stage performance. They discuss the background and conventions of Roman comedy and by offering a complete metrical analysis they help the reader to appreciate the original musical structure of the play. The edition is intended primarily for use by students at school and university but will be of value to anyone interested in reading the play in the original.
