0.75 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 194 pages; This volume complements D. J. Conacher's two earlier studies of Aeschylus, Aeschylus' `Prometheus Bound' (1980) and Aeschylus' `Oresteia' (1987) , and completes his literary commentary on the extant plays of Aeschylus. In this volume Conacher provides a detailed running commentary on the three earlier plays (The Persians, The Seven against Thebes, and The Suppliants) , as well as an analysis of their themes, structure and dramatic techniques and devices. In two more general studies he reviews Aeschylus' dramatic uses of the chorus and of imagery. Conacher's close readings of the text and sensitive analysis of the main problems in the plays will be of benefit to students, especially those encountering these plays for the first time, either in Greek or in translation. He also provides a thorough overview of the various interpretative and philological problems and opinions encountered in Aeschylean scholarship, which will be of interest to senior scholars as well as students.

152 pages. Black and white photographic plates. "This book does not claim to have said anything new, but is rather a reviewing of an old story through an individual lens which may bring into a new perspective the leading characters and events of that story. It is a story that can never be exhausted, and is always unfolding; that fact, and the narrow, unsatisfactory method of disconnecting teaching, and spiritualising in general practice, are my excuses for attempting to give it as one continual history, 'The Drama of the Ages', whose pivotal centre is Christ Himself and His teaching." - from Preface. Above-average wear to blue boards. Infrequent high-lighting to contents. Sound reference copy. Book

The spines tooled in compartments with gold 'player's mask' faces. Corneille was a French dramatist, ranking with Racine as a master of French classical tragedy. Educated by Jesuits, he practiced law briefly in his native Rouen and moved to Paris after the favorable reception of his first play, Melite (1629), a comedy. His first tragedy, Medee (1635), was followed by Le Cid (1637). This masterpiece, based on a Spanish play about the Cid, took Paris by storm; "beautiful as the Cid" became a French proverb. However, Jean Chapelain composed a paper for the newly founded French Academy that attacked the play as plagiaristic and faulty in construction, and thereafter Corneille adhered to classical rules. Among the finest of his score of tragedies that followed are Horace (1640), Cinna (1640), and Polyeucte (1643). The comedy Le Menteur (1643) had great success. Corneille's tragedies exalt the will at the expense of the emotions; his tragic heroes and heroines display almost superhuman strength in subordinating passion to duty. At his best, Corneille was a master of the grand style, powerful and majestic. His last plays (not represented here) are marred by monotonous declamation. Corneille's old age was embittered by the rise of Racine, who replaced him in popular favor [Columbia Encyclopedia].SW3

Tragedie. Early ownership. From the Library of Edwin Wolf II. Thomas Corneille (1625-1709) was a French dramatist and scholar, born in Rouen nineteen years after his famous brother Pierre. After his brother's death, Thomas succeeded his vacant chair in the Academie Francaise. He then turned his attention to philology. In 1704 he lost his sight and was constituted a 'veteran,' a dignity which gave him the privileges of an academician, while exempting him from the duties. He did not allow his blindness to put a stop to his work, however, and in 1708 produced a large Dictionnaire universel geographique et historique in three volumes folio. This was his last major work. His Timocrate boasted of the longest run (80 nights) recorded of any play during the century. SCARCE. SAFE ADD 1

This book was originally published in 1934. Beginning with Aristotle's observation that from the earliest stage Attic Comedy had 'certain definite forms', F. M. Cornford shows that these forms are clearly observable in the plays of Aristophanes and that they derived from a ritual drama common to both tragedy and comedy. Edited with Foreword and additional notes by Theodore H. Gaster. Crisp, tight vintage copy - looks almost unread.Old bookstore stamp on ffep. else fine Book

3 tiny scratches along top edge-- very light shelfwear else Fine. ; Mnemosyne Supplements 314; 580 pages; This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence, it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides’ fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies, since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The book’s thirty-two contributors constitute an international 'who’s who' of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama, and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come.
