Francois La Rochefoucauld - Francois VI also called le Prince de Marcillac Duc de la Rochefoucauld 1613-1680 was a French classical author. He is best known for his 'Memoires' 1664 and the 'Maximes' 1665. These epigrams and proverbs are famous for the way that they express harsh or paradoxical truths in the briefest manner. La Rochefoucauld was a cynical observer of Louis XIV's court who saw in human behavior mostly selfishness hypocrisy and weakness. In his pessimism La Rochefoucauld was very democratic - everybody is a sinner. His insights have influenced amongst others Lord Chesterfield Franklin Thomas Hardy Nietzsche Stendhal and Gide. The brief life of La Rochefoucauld here is probably by Jean Baptiste Suard 1734-1817. When this was issued it was claimed to be the most complete and correct edition to date. This little book is quite scarce and attractive. It would make a nice gift for any French enthusiast. PRICE JUST REDUCED! SW 3 L Language: eng. Half-Leather Hardbound. Very Good.
