182341589A Philadelphie: none listed. 1823. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Good. 12mo; 4 iv 112 pages; Contemporary probably original binding: calf-backed marbled paper-covered boards. Significant wear to the binding sewing compromised considerable foxing throughout -- but a complete copy of this rare American edition of an Aesop's fables in French quatrains. Title page states: "Nouvelle edition dédié a la jeunesse." There is a dedication in verse quatrains to youth page 3 signed with initials at the bottom -- "F. M." "A LA JEUNESSE" The French text appears to the version of Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde. The statement of a price in "sous" on the title page is odd but one noted library holding a copy of this rare edition helps confirm that this "Philadelphie" stated in the imprint is the city in Pennsylvania; the American Antiquarian Society copy states in their catalogue entry: "Place: United States; Pennsylvania; Philadelphia." There are three OCLC numbers but only six locations are scattered across the three accession numbers: Columbia Dickinson College Virginia Tech Georgetown University Millersville Univ. and AAS. See OCLC numbers: 1398897 21709607 and 198424372. Who was F. M. And did the un-named Philadelphia printer or bookseller responsible for this charming book for young students of French accept 75 U.S. cents rather than French "sous" for a copy Given that 1 sous = 5 centimes and 1 livre or franc = 20 sous this 1823 price would not really make sense at 3 francs 15 sous which would have been the price of a very expensive and luxurious volume indeed. Keep in mind that Victor Hugo's 1830 'Les Misérables' informs us that "une flûte de pain" = 1 sou. Was this book really priced at an equivilent cost to 75 wide baguettes of bread Perhaps our modern price is a bit low. . none listed hardcover
