A Large Paper copy in a full morocco binding by Ramage.Illustrated throughout with Bewick's original wood engraved vignettes and with a frontispiece and a full plate portrait of Bewick. Collated complete.Also including 'The Life of Aesop' and 'An Essay Upon Fable' by Oliver Goldsmith. Reprinted from the Newcastle Edition which was published in 1784.With the bookplate of C E Stewart to front pastedown.Thomas Bewick spent almost his entire creative career producing various editions of illustrated 'Aesop's Fables' the first of which was published in 1776. Bewick was an illustrator known for his fine illustrations for books illustrating many natural history works such as 'A History of British Birds' and 'A History of Quadrupeds'. He is known for popularising the practice of printing illustrations using wood producing high-quality illustrations at a lower price. In a full morocco signed binding by Ramage with gilt detailing. Back strip and board perimeters age toned as is common with this shade of morocco. Minor losses of calf to back strip head and tail. Joint heads and tails starting with boards holding firm. A curated three volume set of scarce works containing two copies of the first edition of 'Books For the Bairns. I. Aesop's Fables' one in the original publisher's paper wraps the other rebound in cloth with the original wraps bound in alongside Sally Wood's bibliographical work 'W. T. Stead and His "Books For the Bairns"'. The cloth bound edition includes the new series of Aesop's 'Fables' being 'Books for the Bairns No. XXVI'. Held together in a custom paper clamshell which is in a very good condition.Aesop's 'Fables' was the first volume in Stead's popular series 'Books for the Bairns' which published fairy tales and works of classical literature for children.Sally Wood's volume offers a bibliography of Stead's works as well as a brief biography on him.Aesop's Fables is a selection of fables generally attributed to the Ancient Greek storyteller Aesop who lived around 620 BCE-564 BCE. The fables are moral tales that guide in religious and secular aspects of life following adventures of many different creatures.All three works are illustrated in-text throughout. The new series of Aesop's 'Fables' is illustrated by Brinsley le Fanu.W. T. Stead was a newspaper editor and a pioneer of investigative journalism. He died in 1912 in the sinking of the Titanic.This set was curated by Eric Sweet with his bookplate to the front paste down of the cloth bound first edition. Sweet was a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art before moving to London to work as a lettering artist and typographer for advertising agencies later becoming the head of Birmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctive style. Two volumes are in the original publisher's wraps and one is rebound in cloth by Eric Sweet together in a custom paper clamshell. Externally smart. The paperback issue of 'Books for the Bairns' is little worn and age-toned with light edge wear and a repair to the spine and tail of the rear wrap. Minor handling marks to the wraps and a rubbed out pencil inscription to the head of the front wrap. A couple of marks to the cloth of the rebound 'Books for Bairns'. 'W. T. Stead and His "Books For the Bairns"' is smart a little sunned to the wraps with a few light handling marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with scattered spots 'W. T. Stead and His "Books For the Bairns"' is bright and clean. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page of the paperback 'Books for the Bairns' and to the head of the front wrap of the rebound 'Books for the Bairns'. Neat repair to the tail of the first few pages of the paperback 'Books for the Bairns'. Custom clamshell is a little worn in a very good condition.
