This well-painted scene is likely of 20th century vintage. / The Dutch scholar Peter Burman was professor of the art of rhetoric and the history of Utrecht and also of Greek philology. In 1715 he succeeded Perizonius receiving the chair of history and the Greek language and the art of rhetoric at the Lyon-Batava Academy. Phaedrus wrote in the first century CE and went through dozens of editions but the present edition calls itself the seventh perhaps counting only editions of Burmans redaction of the five books. The first edition of the five books appeared at Troyes in 1596.With several contemporary owner's inscriptions and annotations and drawings throughout; modern stamps on the pastedown.
