1688032445<p>London: Printed by Joseph Streater for sale by T Basset J Robinson B Aylmer Joh Southby And W Canning 1688 A very good copy of this important work on comparative anatomy with engraved title; rubricated title and 30 plates. The original publication had 2 separate parts both complete in themselves - the second section 'The Measure of the Earth' translated by Richard Waller is not present. Alexander Pitfeild undertook to translate this work originally led by Charles Perrault for the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Animals mostly from the royal menageries at Vincennes and Versailles were supplied to the Royal Academy for detailed study and dissection. The first publication including 13 species appeared in 1671 with a second volume 5 years later. The publications had very short print runs and were very expensive being elephant folio with detailed art work mainly by Sebastien Leclerc. There was a growing desire to learn about natural history and the nature of animals and copies of Perrault's work were almost impossible to obtain. Pitfeild's translation was much needed and it became the only work published on comparative anatomy in England between 1660 and 1700. Richard Waller undertook the illustrations copying Leclerc but reducing the size taking care to keep the drawings in proportion. The second part missing here was undertaken not because it was linked in any way but because it was important and of interest to the Royal Society. Copies of Pitfeild's translation are extremely scarce. This copy is in a new binding with cloth spine with title label and paper-covered boards. Second English edition of Claude Perraults 1613-1688 influential work on classical architecture presents a remarkable combination of intellectual rigor practical guidance and fine engraving. Originally published in Paris in 1683 Perraults treatise was at the time controversial and dismissed by the Académie Royale dArchitecture as unsuitable for students and never republished in France or abroad apart from England.The English translation undertaken by the architect John James ca. 1672-1746 first appeared in 1708 and this second edition of 1722 adds an alphabetical explanation of architectural terms and several new engravings. John Sturt 1658-1730 celebrated engraver and publisher enriched the edition with a beautifully engraved title page a dedication leaf to Thomas Earl of Pembroke 1656-1733 and more than 50 engraved initials head- and tailpieces textual illustrations and retains 6 engraved plates illustrating the Tuscan Doric Ionic Corinthian and Composite orders.Perraults work exerted lasting influence on English architecture. Figures such as Nicholas Hawksmoor ca. 1661-1736 John Vanbrugh 1664-1726 and William Kent 1685-1748 drew upon his principles while later theorists including Isaac Ware 1704-1766 and William Chambers 1723-1796 integrated his approach into their own treatises. This second English edition therefore represents both a practical manual for builders and a key intellectual link between French architectural theory and English practice.With the initials WD and the name W. Danby written on the front pastedown possibly referring to William Danby 1752-1833 the English writer who rebuilt his family home Swinton Park and constructed a replica of Stonehenge on his estate. In 1784 he served as High Sheriff of Yorkshire. The binding shows some wear with some rubbing to the boards and spine. There is a tear to the lower margin of the title page not affecting text or illustration and some staining throughout particularly on the page containing the table of chapters to part I on pp. 94-95 and on p. 25. There is also an index. ESTC R2399</p><p>Perrault was a physician and architect the design for the Eastern portion of the Louvre is attributed to him. His book on the NATURAL HISTORY OF ANIMALS has engraved drawings of each animal and discusses their anatomy among the unusual animals included are the "sea fox" the Canadian beaver and "Pintados".</p><p>Waller who translated the second book for the Royal Society subsequently wrote a biography of the scientist Robert Hooke.</p><p>The second title: "Account of the Measure of a Degree of a Great Circle of the Earth" discusses the attempts to determine the size of the earth from the time of the Ancients until the publication of this work using mathematical formulae optical instruments and other mechanical devices some of which are illustrated by beautiful engravings.</p> Printed by Joseph Streater, and are to be Sold by T. The stories were written by Charles Perrault Madame d'Aulnoy and Count Anthony Hamilton. Perrault is known to have laid the foundation for the literary genre of fairy tales with his publication 'Histoires ou Contes de Temps Passe' of which the best known 'Puss in Boots' is included in this volume. d'Aulnoy is known for coining the phrase 'fairy-tales' and she names her works 'Contes de Fees'. Hamilton was a soldier as well as a writer and was exiled from France for siding with James II against the Prince of Orange. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac a well known book illustrator of natural sciences. His first commision was to illustrated editions of the Bronte novels. Lucien became acquainted with the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1890s and founded the Eragny Press in 1894. Perrault's telling of the folk tale of Donkey Skin was published in 1695. The Pissarros produced over 30 books at the Eragny Press their productions notable for their woodcuts and the Pissarros' focus on the interplay of illustration and text. Thomas Sturge-Moore the poet playwright and designer was introduced to the Pissarros in 1891 by Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press and became a regular choice for the Eragny Press's illustrations. Even as several areas throughout bear light dampstain and pages hold a slight wave the leaves have absolutely beautifully and evenly toned with very little foxing or discoloration for being over 350 years old.
