Finely bound by Belz-Niédrée in uniform contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards the boards ruled in gilt the spines with five raised bands compartments ruled and decorated in gilt and with titles in gilt. Top edge gilt the others untrimmed. Marbled endpapers. Binder's ink stamp to the head of the front endpaper. Printed on laid paper. Title pages printed in red and black and each with an engraved portrait vignette. Illustrated with 115 finely engraved vignettes 71 in the first two volumes 44 in the second one for each tales. 4 iv 260pp. 4 v 301 7pp.; 4 208 1pp. 4 210 1pp. A very good set the bindings square and tight with minor rubbing to the extremities and a small bash to the bottom corner of the upper board of volume one Fontaine and to the top corner of the lower board of volume one Voltaire et al. The contents with occasional light foxing are otherwise in very good order throughout. A splendid mid nineteenth-century edition of classic fables by Fontaine Voltaire and other celebrated authors beautifully illustrated with a series of exquisitely detailed engravings and handsomely bound by Belz-Niédrée of Paris. In old marbled paper covered boards and thin leather spine also leather tips to the corners. Pages spotted throughout. The corner of pages 115/116 is torn off but without loss of text. The plate facing page 152 is very nearly detached and is creased along the outer edge. I am not sure if this is complete or not - the title page is engraved there is no printed title page.
