First edition first printing one of one of 50 deluxe copies on Whatman; square 4to 25.5 x 25.5 cm; 8 circular pochoir plates 'colorié au patron' and 60 black and white illustrations in the text after Laforge; modern black morocco flat spine title in silver to spine original pink wrappers bound in a fine copy.<br /> misc23 Charles Perrault's classic fairy tales are here illustrated with striking art deco pochoir plates by Lucien Laforge. This copy is from the first printing of 50 examples on thick paper and is not only much rarer than the general trade edition but is far superior in terms of quality. <br /><br />Lucien Laforge was born in Paris in 1889 and was a staunch pacifist feigning lunacy twice to be discharged during WWI. He published a work in 1922 titled 'le film 1914' which satirised the conflict with grotesque cartoons blaming the horrors on the greed and stupidity of the wealthy elite. His simple and sometimes haunting style is also evident in his illustrations for fairy tales and was not considered fashionable at the time but displays the chilling legacy of the war. The bold black lines of his characters were incredibly progressive and appear almost cartoon-like.<br /> Paris, La Sirène, 1920. unknown

All extrmities rubbed/fraying/chaffed and/or scraped. Previous owners inscription on e/p dated 1873. Otherwise no date found. Ten full page black and white steel engraved tissue guarded plates and lots of wood engraved vignettes in the text. A little very light Foxing. Frontispiece - Le Petit Poucet with tissue guard. The text of the tales is entirely engraved in italics and superbly printed on strong laid paper. The illustrations in the text are finely engraved on steel they are due to the imagination of Pauquet Marvy Jeanron Jacque Beaucé Jules Compagnon and engraved by Monin. The 15-page notice on the life and works of Perrault by Paul Jacob appeared for the first time in the 1836 edition the same is true for the dissertation in fine on fairy tales. One general title in bistre and 9 frontispieces in bistre; each page of each tale entirely engraved with text and composition framing the text or as headpieces tailpieces. Publisher's binding in half dark green shagreen. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated with ornate compartments. All edges gilt. White glazed watered paper for the endpapers. Signs of rubbing. 2 frontispieces partly detached. Some small scattered foxing on paper that is quite white with full margins. A handsome copy. ""It is one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century and perhaps the rarest in fine condition."" Carteret Le trésor du bibliophile romantique et moderne. This edition is very rare and is encountered only very infrequently just like the one published by Curmer it found itself as Carteret affirms in the hands of children with little bibliophilic sense.
