Later in the same year he tested an early prototype of the Me262 the world's first operational jet fighter before leaving combat to concentrate on the air defence of Germany against the RAF and USAAF bombing offensive. Increasingly critical of higher Nazi authority he was relieved of his command following the 'Fighter Revolt' and returned to front-line duty with the elite Jagdverband in the Spring of 1945. He finished the war with 103 victories on over 700 missions and was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oakleaves Swords and Diamonds one of Germany's highest decorations. Galland's autobiography was first published as 'Die Ersten und die Letzen' in 1953 and is widely regarded as the most insightful and far-reaching account of WWII Axis air combat and one of the finest overall aviation memoirs of all time. Large dark stain at the foot of volume two as well as a narrow split to the leather measuring approximately 8 cm. Foxing and browning throughout. From p. 70 of volume one onward a water stain affecting the lower margin similarly present throughout volume two. Pages 26 and 27 with a tear without loss. Corners rubbed. One of the finest illustrated books of the Romantic period and of wood engraving remarkable both for its ornamental richness and for the extraordinary inventiveness of its designs. Si Antoine Galland fut le premier à révéler les Mille et Une Nuits à l’Europe en 1704, sa traduction était avant tout littéraire : il adaptait les contes au goût de la cour de Versailles, en gommant les passages trop crus ou les répétitions poétiques pour en faire un objet de divertissement galant. Jean-Jacques Caussin de Perceval, professeur de langue arabe au Collège de France, intervient un siècle plus tard avec une ambition différente. Il ne se contente pas de rééditer Galland ; il complète la série. À l'époque, on savait que la version de Galland était incomplète par rapport aux manuscrits originaux. Caussin de Perceval a donc puisé dans les manuscrits de la Bibliothèque impériale pour traduire des contes inédits et donner à l'oeuvre une envergure nouvelle, plus fidèle à la structure foisonnante du recueil oriental. Edition originale de la traduction revue par Caussin de Perceval. "Edition la meilleure et la plus complète", Brunet (2, 361). Bon exemplaire, en assez bon état, dans une reliure typique 1er empire.
