Les auteurs dénoncent les abus de droit opérés par l’Église en matière d’excommunication depuis les origines, particulièrement envers les gens de théâtre. Ils prennent soin de faire la différence entre les farces passées et l’excellence de la tragédie de leur temps, édifiant pour "le goût des moeurs"; les actrices et acteurs sont des représentants de la grande culture, défenseurs de la poésie et de la littérature, soutenus par le roi comme par les plus hautes autorités. Première édition sous ce titre des "Lettres d'un François sur les Anglois", donnée avec le consentement et sous la supervision de l'auteur et accompagnée d'une nouvelle préface. Adressées aux principales personnalités françaises du monde des lettres, des arts et des sciences (Buffon, Du Bos, Freret, Helvétius, Crébillon, Maupertuis, Duclos, le président Bouhier, Montesquieu, etc.), ces lettres "constituèrent la principale source sur l'Angleterre jusqu'à Montesquieu". L'abbé voyageur et philosophe rend compte de ses longs séjours en Angleterre et livre ses observations sur les moeurs, la religion, les sciences et les arts, l'industrie naissante, le commerce et la navigation, le gouvernement et "l'équilibre de pouvoirs", la justice, les modes, la gastronomie, la noblesse, l'architecture, le jardinage, la liberté de la presse et de l'édition, le théâtre, etc. Plusieurs concernent le statut des femmes. L'auteur traduisit lui-même son essai en anglais sous le titre de 'Letters on the English and French nations'. Né à Dijon, ecclésiastique, avocat au Parlement de Paris, homme des Lumières, Jean-Bernard Le Blanc (1707-1781) obtint la place d'historiographe des Bâtiments du Roi grâce à Madame de Pompadour. Il fut également l'un des premiers traducteurs de Hume en français. Selon Weller l'ouvrage aurait été imprimé à Paris. (Weller, II, 130). Quelques petits accrocs à la reliure. Raymond Trousson ("Notes de lecture" in "Dix-Huitième Siècle", 1981, p. 445 sq.) rappelle "les origines autobiographiques de ce roman, ce qu'il doit à Richardson, Crébillon fils et Marivaux, tout en mettant en relief l'originalité de la romancière: dépouillement, concentration du temps et de l'espace romanesques, absence de digressions. Roman de l'illusion, où l'héroïne constate que l'amant n'était qu'une création de sa propre pensée, roman féministe enfin, où s'exprime un éloquent réquisitoire contre les hommes". Élu à la Chambre des communes en 1735, il occupa d'importantes fonctions. Ces lettres s'adressent aux principales personnalités politiques et littéraires de son temps. Diderot y expose ses conceptions novatrices sur la formation du langage et annonce plusieurs de ses théories esthétiques notamment "le modèle idéal", "le sublime" ou "le spectateur de sang-froid", théories qu’il reprendra par la suite dans ses "Salons" ou dans le 'Paradoxe sur le comédien'. (Adams, LH4. Tchemerzine-Scheler, II, 929 notes de L. Scheler). Très bel exemplaire, très frais, grand de marges, imprimé sur papier fort, très bien relié à l'époque.

Elle a été rajoutée par L. Scheler, dans ses addenda à Tchemerzine (I, 925), pour signaler que cette édition est "fort rare". Selon A. Gerits ('A short Contribution', p. 293), cette édition aurait été imprimée à Amsterdam chez Marc-Michel Rey. Ce texte qui devait provoquer l'arrestation et l'incarcération de Diderot au Donjon de Vincennes, marque une étape décisive dans la pensée du philosophe, la rupture avec le néo-spinozisme de ses débuts et son évolution vers des positions matérialistes et athées. In-8, broché, couverture ancienne d’attente de papier gris, 50 p. titre compris, vignette de titre, bandeaux et culs-de-lampe. Rare édition à l'adresse de Berlin, en 50 pages, publiée l'année de l'originale. "Dès la mort du grand Frédéric (17 août 1786), Mirabeau s'offrant en mentor à son successeur, lui adresse [ce] mémoire, plein d'avertissements et d'exhortations, de suggestions, de réformes à entreprendre. C'est un véritable plan de gouvernement contenant nombre d'idées déjà exposées par Mirabeau qui, par la suite, les défendra aux États généraux. Le nouveau roi répond à l'auteur le 20 août 1786. Ce n'est que plusieurs mois après, l'année suivante, que Mirabeau publie sa lettre pour répondre aux critiques qui l'accusaient d'avoir remis au Roi "une satire contre l'immortel Frédéric II"." Jean Baptiste Barnau et considéré par celui-ci comme un remède universel. (cf article du Supplément au n° 255 du "Journal de Paris", 12 septembre 1783). "En effet guérir quarante maladies, les plus terribles et les plus réfractaires à la Médecine, avec un seul remède, avec une simple écorce, c'est être le bienfaiteur de l'humanité souffrante; c'est faire beaucoup plus que n'a fait Hippocrate que nous avons tous la bonté et la bonhomie d'admirer encore." (p. 5 dans le texte) La liste des maladies que l'on peut soi-disant guérir grâce à l'écorce est donnée. Bon exemplaire.
