His illustrations capture both the exoticism and psychological intensity of the story blending elements of Art Nouveau theatrical design and early twentieth-century decorative illustration.

René Bull d. 1942 "was born in Ireland and went to Paris to study engineering but left this for art work in London 1892. After working for various magazines he was appointed 'special' for Black and White 1896 attending the Armenian massacres and the Graeco-Turkish War as artist. He served in the First World War in RNVR 1916 and RAF 1917. Spines just lightly sunned bindings with very light signs of use boards with a hint of dulling from leather preservative faint offsetting from etchings onto titles and pages opposite each chapter opening otherwise very fine internally--entirely clean and fresh with spacious margins and in well-preserved attractive bindings.

This substantially-sized stately set offers a winning combination of handsome bindings charming illustrations and a deluxe bibliophile's printing in a limited edition. A novel of historical fiction Mérimée's "Chronique" is set in the 16th century during the reign of Charles IX and the French Wars of Religion. The plot revolves around two brothers one Catholic and one a Protestant convert whose conflict in the end the Catholic brother is responsible for the Huguenot brother's death mirrors the wider discord of the period's French Wars of Religion. The novel is known for its meticulous descriptions and faithfulness to historic fact most notably its depiction of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in which thousands of Huguenots were murdered by Catholic mobs. First published in 1829 the novel appears here with illustrations by Edmond Morin "a spirited French Artist" in Houfe's words who worked as a painter illustrator and etcher in Paris and London. Our author Prosper Mérimée 1803-70 would later become a pioneer of the novella and is best known for his work "Carmen" upon which Bizet's famous opera was based. In addition to his literary contributions Mérimée also played a key role in the conservation of French history. As Inspector-General of Historical Monuments from 1833-52 he travelled extensively around France documenting the country's architectural treasures and facilitating plans for their repair and preservation. His more well-known projects include the restoration of the facade of Notre-Dame de Paris saving Vézelay Abbey from collapse and conserving the six tapestries collectively known as "The Lady and the Unicorn." The attractive bindings here are the work of Pétrus Ruban 1851-1929. Praised by the bibliophile Octave Uzanne for taking inspiration from everything around him--flowers birds architecture--and for his facility with colors Ruban became quite a fashionable binder who worked largely for the great collectors of the day among them Beraldi Baudin Granjon de l'Espinay and Romagnol. Flety notes that "with a fertile imagination he practices all genres of binding with equal felicity"--a talent that is very much on display here. Ruban won silver medals at the Palace of Industry and at the Universal Exposition in 1889 with judges at the latter praising his careful study of both historic master binders and modern artists noting that Ruban would "soon achieve the rank he so rightly seeks.". 182886036Paris: Brissot-Thivars 1828. Fine. Brissot-Thivars Paris 1828 21.20 x 12.70 cm relié First edition from Balzac's printing house. Between 1826 and 1828 Balzac purchased a printing house and partnered with a typographer but the enterprise went bankrupt in 1828. Books printed for Balzac show a concern for typography and fine book production. Bound in half burgundy long-grain morocco with corners ca. 1840. Spine with raised bands decorated with 5 tools blind and gilt fillets head and tail rolls. Double fillet border on boards and corners. Some scattered browning. Louis Gillet bookplate. Very fine copy. La jacquerie and La famille de Carjaval are two dramatic and historical pieces that evoke Schiller's theatre. These dramatic scenes were intended to be read rather than performed. In La Jacquerie Mérimée reverses the vision of this peasant revolt through the prism of new romantic historiography and the peasants are no longer perceived as bloodthirsty barbarians but as victims of absolutism. With economy of means and a clear concise style Mérimée brings this feudal epic to life before our eyes. Brissot-Thivars hardcover

184594
Large 8vo mm 242x160 pp. 48; a good copy in early 20th-century half morocco spine lettered gilt the original printed wrappers and spine bound in; with stamp of the 'Société Démulation du Dept. des Vosges' to upper wrapper; bookplate of Emmy Joubert; with one page autograph ms. by Mérimée tipped in. The first appearance in print of Carmen. Mérimée's short novel was first published in the journal Revue des Deux Mondes in 1845. It passed virtually unnoticed and did not receive a single review. Mérimée reworked the text before publishing it in book form alongside two other novellas the following year. In 1852 Carmen appeared as the first text in a collection of Mérimée's works Nouvelles together with Mérimée's own translation of Pushkin's The Gypsies. In this form it began to enjoy some success and Nouvelles was reprinted regularly throughout the 1850s and 1860s but it was not until 1875 with the creation of Bizet's opera based closely on Mérimée's text that the Carmen myth was created.

A separate off-print on papier vélin is also known printed in a very small number of copies.

The autograph ms. is a memo on the Revolution of 1848 with reference to the recovery of looted material from the museums and national collections in Paris: '… From 1834-1860 Mérimée held the position of inspector general of historic monuments and he published many reports in this official capacity. The present note which has been dated 1848 in pencil in a later hand is evidently a contemporary account of the events of that year.
Au Bureau de la Revue des Deux Mondes

Spain and Russia were his principal literary sources and he was the first interpreter of Russian literature in France. Aleksandr Pushkin was his master especially for his themes of violence and cruelty and the human psychology behind them. In one of Mérimée's best-known stories Mateo Falcone 1829 a father kills a son for betraying the family honor.
