He is best known for the series of Eclectic Readers (McGuffey Readers), textbooks which were widely used throughout much of the nineteenth century. Henry Ford used the McGuffey Readers when growing up and later brought his birthplace to Greenfield Village and built a one-room schoolhouse using logs from a barn at McGuffey's birthplace.
