The maps colors are very fresh and the maps only have some faint foxing if at all while the B&W engravings vary as to foxing – the busts of emperors more so the full illustrations less. Upper text block slightly darkened. Foxing throughout sporadic with owner's name in ink on some half title pages otherwise very tight solid copies uniformly aged. This book was published in 1935 three years after Manchukuo was founded. After a short introduction the book explains numbers pronouns and grammar before teaching Manchu conversations on various topics including weather time and travelling. The target readers would have been those visiting Manchuria on business or as tourists. Thus conversations are set in the context of shopping and travelling. Pronunciations of Manchu are written in the Latin alphabet and katakana. Upon Returning To The United States In 1920 Sachs Exhibited At The Art Institute Of Chicago And Established The Chicago Industrial Art School Which Soon Failed Due To Lack Of Sufficient Funding. Afterward Sachs Became The First Director Of The Dayton Museum Of Fine Arts Now The Dayton Art Institute. During This Time He Also Served As The U.S. Representative Of Artist George Grosz. Around 1924 Sachs Moved To Los Angeles Where He Designed The Interiors Of The New Gas Company Building. As A Muralist And Decorator Sachs Went On To Design The Interiors Of Many Los Angeles Landmarks Including The Bullocks Wilshire Building Now Home To Southwestern Law School Union Station Los Angeles City Hall And The Title Insurance And Trust Company Building. An Educator As Well As An Artist Sachs Also Directed The Creative Art Students League Of Los Angeles. Sachs Was Active Within The L.A. Weimar Exile Community Of Artists Writers And Filmmakers. This is the first published monograph by Louis Loewe, the Jewish Silesian linguist who made major contributions to the study of Hieroglyphics and who worked as Sir Moses Montefiores secretary. Sir Moses Montefiore in his will named Loewe one of his executors, and directed that he should be entrusted with all his diaries and other private papers to enable him to undertake the task of writing a biography of Lady Montefiore. This became a biography of Sir Moses also. It was completed in June 1888, and published in 1890 as Diaries of Sir Moses and Lady Montefiore. (Wikipedia, 2017) This book includes amazing type-set illustrations of Egyptian hieroglyphics which Loewe translates into English, Greek, and Hebrew. OCLC lists 8 copies worldwide, and no copies in the United States. Ex-library with Institutional Stamp. Inscribed by the author on the front wrapper. Boards are worn.
