German language hardcovers; 40 volumes in 20 books. With original boards and gilt lettering on spines. Good condition for age; six of the volumes are in acceptable condition. Age related marks and wear to the exteriors most notably on the leading corners which are bumped and split. The spine body is detached on volumes 25/26 and 39/40; at the time of writing, four of the other volumes have split spine sides with the spine body on each partially detached - these are very fragile and are also close to coming loose. A few other volumes have smaller splits to the spine sides and instances of chipped spine heads. Previous owner's name and the year 1876 (in fountain pen) on each FEP. Foxing on the pages; some instances of nicked and creased edges throughout. Partial splits on some hinges however the binding remains sound in all volumes, with clear text. CM Used

This volume discusses independence movements in South America in particular developments in the second half of 1817 as well as the reactions of European powers. Pages 177-258 contain translations of documents concerning Haiti and other areas. In 1789 Pradt 1759-1837 was elected to the États Généraux; he fled to Germany after the beginning of the French Revolution. After he returned to France in 1800 Pradt supported Napoleon and became bishop of Poitiers 1805 and archbishop of Malines 1808.
