Original red and white speckled paper over boards with original printed spine label lacking half. Former owner's small stamp at head of title page: A. Schoen. This is the second volume from a scarce early 19th-century series by the chemist Sigismund Friedrich Hermbstädt which presented developments in fabric dying and bleaching. In Very Good Condition: joint and corners are rubbed but solid; lacking half of spine label and the underlying paper; vertical crack in spine with slight loss of paper; browning and light foxing throughout; clean and solid. Bötte & Tannhof First Century of German Language Printing in the USA 610. The author Christopher Schultz was a leader of the group of Schwenckfelders that settled in Pennsylvania in the 1730s. They were followers of the German theologian Caspar Schwenckfeld von Ossig 1489-1561 one of the earliest promoters of the Protestant Reformation in Silesia. In his writings he opposed war secret societies the taking of oaths infant baptism and the establishment of denominations. In Very Good Condition: small scrape on back board larger on front board; light crackling to leather but joints are solid; corners lightly rubbed; occasional foxing and soiling; a few pages have darkened much more than the rest; otherwise clean and tight. Frontispiece of Liebig illustration of his laboratory on title page of Volume 1; frontispiece of Wohler and illustration of his laboratory on tile page of volume 2. Letters between two of the outstanding chemists of the nineteenth century. Liebig with Wohler established the theory of organic radicals and established the division of foods into fats carbohydrates and proteins. 1951 letters laid in to and from the Library of Congress which replies that this was the only edition that it was apparently never translated into English and that the Library of Congress did not own a copy but that a copy was reported to exist in the U.S. at the University of Washington at Seattle. Since that time the letters were reprinted at Gottingen in 1982. Slight wear some foxing to preliminary and final leaves bottom 2" of cloth on spine Vol II has been professionally repaired.
