Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre also called Bernardin de St. Pierre 19 January 1737 Le Havre 21 January 1814 Éragny Val-d'Oise was a French writer and botanist. 1890LIST110Havana: R. Testar 1890. Albumen photograph on cardstock mount image measuring 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches on 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inch mount. A view of an American warship in Havana harbor likely taken prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain in early 1898. The photographers Leach and Patterson of Calle San Rafael published several views of Cuba at this time mostly of bucolic scenes around Havana and its environs. The American cruiser is similar in design to the U.S.S. Maine with slight differences - two smokestacks instead of three. An excellent example with minor wear to mount and fine image. R. A rare full-margined copy in original boards. <br/><br/>The masterwork of the Spanish priest and historian Juan Antonio Llorente 1756-1823. At time of publication Llorente had been living in France for a number of years - having identified with the French Bonaparte when the alliance between Spain and France collapsed in 1808. Bindings present quite well despite some minor abrasions to the leather and a chipped head of the spine to the first volume; contents are heavily foxed and toned throughout; early 20th century owner name in pencil on half titles early owner's wax stamp monogram on each title page. <br /> <br /> Manual of diplomatic customs procedures and formulas apparently published for the market in newly independent Latin America where diplomatic relations with foreign powers were just beginning. This may well have been the standard manual for Latin America's first ambassadors and consuls in Europe.
