J. -C. , mais aussi comme une véritable grammaire des comportements et des valeurs de la société tardo-républicaine. De 55 à 46 av. J. -C. , Cicéron développe une pensée rhétorique qui se veut moins une théorie abstraite de la persuasion qu’une réflexion globale sur la pratique du discours, dans sa dimension technique, certes, mais aussi sociale, politique et culturelle. En faisant se rencontrer la réalité des pratiques oratoires romaines, les héritages de la rhétorique latine développée au début du I er siècle av. J. -C. , mais aussi les diverses conceptions rhétoriques et philosophiques de l’èthos, les analyses que les ouvrages cicéroniens de la maturité consacrent à la persona oratoire parviennent à théoriser un orateur qui n’est plus une figure abstraite, mais un praticien véritablement romain et inscrit dans son contexte. On voit ainsi apparaître une réflexion unique dans l’histoire de la rhétorique ancienne, qui ouvre la théorie du discours sur des réalités intellectuelles et pratiques qui, auparavant, lui avaient toujours échappé. Ainsi, loin de se contenter d’une transposition de la rhétorique grecque dans l’univers romain, Cicéron parvient à formaliser, dans un système rhétorique original, les règles implicites qui régissaient le comportement des acteurs politiques de son temps.
