He was secretary of the Jewish community in Vienna, and did a lasting service to education by his visit to the Orient in 1856. He founded the first modern Jewish school (the Von Lämmel Schule) in Jerusalem. His brilliant volumes Nach Jerusalem describing his eastern tour have been translated into English, as is the case with many of his poems. His collected poems appeared in three volumes in 1880 (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1911) . SUBJECTS: Hebrew poetry. OCLC lists 6 copies worldwide (OCLC: 19149881) . Ex-library with usual markings. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original illustrated and decorative wrappers. Minor wear on extremities of cover. Partly uncut and untrimmed. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 78 p. Hegira: 1305 = Gregorian: 1888. Serie: Kütüphane-i Ebüzziya, Aded: 66. First and only edition of this first and earliest antisemitic book in Turkish literature. "It was the first work that carried the traces of antisemitic discourse towards the Jewish people in the Ottomans" (Özkul, Çomak, Uzun). Ebüzziya Tevfik, who raised questions such as "why the Jews do not have a homeland", "why they are not moral" and "why they were exiled throughout history", and discussed these in the first two chapters of his book, is in search of a solution to the "Jewish question" in the final chapter despite taking such a harsh stance in advance. Tevfik was a journalist and writer who started in the path of journalism after having worked as a civil servant for a brief time. He published the newspapers Ibret, Hadika, and Sirac (1873) (1873) with Namik Kemal. Ebüzziya Tevfik, who was a member of the Young Ottoman Association, was exiled to Rhodes together with Ahmet Mithat Efendi after the incidents that arose following Namik Kemal's 'Vatan Yahut Silistre' (Country or Boatswain's Pipe) play in 1873. He returned to Istanbul after the death of Sultan Abdülaziz. He did research in the area of publishing in Vienna where he lived during the rule of Abdülhamid. He established the Ebüzziya Publishing House after his return to Turkey and published the books of the famous writers of the time such as Namik Kemal, Ziya Pasa, Sinasi, Ahmet Rasim, Recaizade Ekrem, and Muallim Naci. He published 'Mecmua-i Ebuzziya' (1880). He was exiled to Konya in 1890 by the Abdülhamit administration on the grounds that he wasn't suitable for civil service. He was elected as Antalya parliamentary deputy (1908) to the parliament that was formed on the announcement of the Second Constitutional Monarchy. Ebüzziya Tevfik, who prepared compilations and translations on anthologies, theater plays, and memoirs, is known more for his contributions to publishing and as a famous editor of the time than as a writer. Period boards. 8vo, 44 pages, 17 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates to: The Reading of the Torah: For Explaining the Root of Reading and Its Use...with Beer Rehovot Letter. Explanation of the root of Kara and how it was used by the sages in the Talmud. The title page states that it will explain their intent in a clear language and explain the subject of yesh aim le-Mikra and aim le-Messorah, that is, whether a verse is to be understood as it is written or as it is read. It also addresses other issues in the Talmud built upon the structure of the Hebrew language. There are approbations from Rabbi Akiva Eger and from Rabbi Simha Wiel. An apologia from the author follows, and then the text, in a single column in rabbinic type. It begins with introductory material and continues, in the order of issues in the Talmud. After the discourses based on the Talmud is a strong refutation (33a-44b) on modifications to the accepted liturgy in the book Iggeret beit Tefillah by Isaac Satanof (1732-1804) . The latter was a Haskalah writer, who, in his book, classified every word that he explained as either "Hebrew" or "talmudic, " and proceeded to clarify this question at other opportunities as well. Satanof attempted to break out of the strict framework of biblical style, although he himself was very adept in the biblical style called melizah. Hence he demanded that new words be coined; in Iggeret Beit Tefillah he complains that the vocabulary of biblical Hebrew had not preserved its great lexical range. Rabbi Coeslin was also the author of Mesilol bedikduk Loshon ha-Kodesh. SUBJECTS: Masorah. Hebrew language -- Lexicography. Hebrew language -- Lexicography. Masorah. OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. Miss Jennie Mannheimer will recite some of H.N Bialiks poems. HERR NAHUM SOKOLOV will deliver an address on The Development and Future of Hebrew Literature.....Rev. Dr. Louis Grossman will preside. Deutsch, Neumark, and Grossman were leaders of the Reform movement at the time; Bloch went on to edid the Journal of Jewish Bibliography and to head the Jewish devision at NYPL. Jennie Mannheimer (1872-1943), aka Jane Manner, was an American elocutionist, acting coach, and teacher of speech and drama. Her father, Sigmund Mannheimer, was a professor and librarian at Hebrew Union College .Jennie Mannheimer was one of the first two women to earn a bachelor's degree in Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College, in 1888 .[She] was director of the drama department at the Cincinnati College of Music from 1900 until 1907. She also ran her own school, the Cincinnati School of Expression (1894-1912). In New York, She was founder of the Drama Recital Club, and a member of the New York Drama League, the New York League of American Pen Women, the Council of Jewish Women, and the Temple Emmanu-El Women's Auxiliary (Wikipedia). Ibriah, a Cincinnati organization committed to Hebrew conversation and literature, was, not surprisingly, also a center of Zionist support, despite the Reforms dominance in local Jewish thought and culture. Here the host a gathering to meet leading modern Hebrew writer Nahum Sokolov. Joan Friedman notes in a 2006 article on Solomon Freedhof at HUC during the period that, The hot issue of the day during Freehofs student and early faculty years at the College was Zionism. It was discussed in the Literary Society and everywhere else on campus. During the 19111912 academic year, Silver and Professor Neumark had founded a Hebrew-speaking club, Ibriah, of which Marcus was a member, though he does not mention whether Freehof was also. The CCAR had taken a firm stance against Zionism as early as 1897, although individual rabbis were outspoken Zionists.104 Kohler was a committed anti-Zionist. Nevertheless, despite his best efforts, between 1910 and 1920 the student body gradually shifted to an overwhelmingly pro-Zionist perspective as its demographics changed, world events furthered the Zionist cause, and Louis Brandeis popularized a nonideological Zionism acceptable to American Jews, including many Reform Jews (AJAJ, LVIII, Nr ½, p. 21).
