Aged and worn with a corner cut away but the text complete.Nineteen lines in a close and difficult hand. Addressed to 'My dear Mgnr i.e. Monsignor' and signed 'E B Pusey'. Interpretation of Pusey's execrable handwriting is challenging. He appears to be ‘lecturing on the Psalms’ and may be requesting ‘combined lectures’. Other phrases that stand out are ‘some other Hebrew subject’ ‘the original idea’ ‘supplement the Professors lectures’ ‘competition studies’ ‘it is difficult to obtain a class of any dimension’. One passage seems decipherable: ‘The Psalms have been one of my special studies before my Professorial years; and now too I review all the latest writings upon them’. See Image. No date. Note: Statuta Aularia: "statutes made by the University for the government of the Halls" presumably as opposed to 'Colleges'. "The Oxford University Act 1854 and the university statute De aulis privatis On private Halls of 1855 allowed any Master of Arts aged at least 28 years to open a private hall after obtaining a licence to do so.3 The longest lived of the thirteen private halls was Charsley's Hall 1862–1891" Wikipedia. I suppose the Publisher who sell sic the Bodleian book will tell them I will wroite to them". Note: I have traced no publication of Tauchnitz's atributable to Pusey. And the only book in which he was involved associated with the Bodleian that I've traced is "Treasures of Oxford : containing poetical compositions by the ancient Jewish authors in Spain : and compiled from manuscripts in the Bodleian Library Oxford / Part I" published in 1851 by Groombridge. The letter begins: 'A friend of mine Mr. Jackson having told Mr. Rowbotham Ruskin's tutor John Rowbotham that I had discovered a method of trisecting an angle that gentleman said he had done it himself which I believe he has upon the proposition you showed me - he says it was originally published by Professor Leslie'. Inglis considers that 'Mr. R. seems to have hit upon something he does not quite comprehend'. Rowbotham called upon Inglis the previous night '& showed me his diagram I happened to have one also upon a slate made in consequence of the conversation I had with you some days since'. He feels that 'all that Mr. R cannot account for in his method is made clear in minebut whether he sees through it or not I dont know'. Rowbotham 'is going to publish his in a periodical next month'. Cory will then see that 'it is quite a different method from the one I showed you on the 3d. instant at Sothebys & which I invented in the month of December last'. He showed his diagram to Rowbotham 'but not the means by which I discovered the ratio contained in it'. Inglis must now 'be content to stand in the background' but considers it right 'to keep myself clear of any suspicion hereafter of having borrowed my discovery from Mr. R'. If Rowbotham 'fails in giving a good demonstration of his there are many to whom it will readily suggest one'. Inglis believes he can 'both rectify his diagram & give a clear analysis of it'. Title translates as “The Season.â€<br> Rare volume 1 published in the USSR of the quarterly literary magazine Ha-Tekufah. Includes essays by Simon Dubnow poetry short stories translations and articles.<br> Ha-Tekufah was a “Hebrew periodical devoted to literary scientific and social subjects which appeared first as a quarterly then as an annual intermittently between 1918 and 1950. Ha-Tekufah received the financial backing of Abraham Joseph Stybel a philanthropist who had placed David Frischmann in charge of launching Hebrew literary projects on an unprecedented large scale. Accordingly Frischmann established both the Stybel publishing house and launched Ha-Tekufah serving as the editor of both projects. The first volume of Ha-Tekufah appeared in Moscow early in 1918 before the Bolshevik regime had decided to suppress Hebrew literature. Frischmann published the works of the world's best authors and scholars. The literary standards of the periodical were high. Frischmann encouraged young authors for example Eliezer Steinman. Printed on high quality cotton rag/ Famous work by renowned Medieval Jewish Rabbi Physician and Philosopher Moses Maimonides a.k.a. Ramba"m 1135-1204. Translated from Judeo-Arabic into Hebrew by Rabbi Isaac ben Nathan. This is the first edition with a German commentary: Renowned Orientalist and bibliographer Moritz Steinschneider see below added a summary a linguistic analysis and a thematic analysis in his preface. Age wear to binding with minor browning and foxing throughout. Overall clean and tight. In Hebrew with German preface. Good condition. R. Moses Maimonides Rambam was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. On the editor: Moritz Steinschneider 1816 – 1907 was a Bohemian Orientalist and bibliographer. He received his early instruction in Hebrew from Jacob Steinschneider 1782 - 1856 his father who was not well versed in both Talmud and secular science. In order to show the part that Jews had taken in the general history of civilization Kulturgeschichte Steinschneider chose fields unrelated to Jewish religion and theology like mathematics medicine natural history and philology. He was the first scholar to give a systematic survey of Jewish literature till the end of the eighteenth century and to publish catalogues of the Hebrew manuscripts and books which are found in the public libraries of Europe. The Bodleian catalogue was the foundation of his reputation as the greatest Jewish bibliographer.
