1979508629Institute for the History of Arabic Science 1979. Paperback. VERY GOOD. Critical text of Pseudo-Apollonios in Arabic with German introduction. 702pp. 4to sewn binding in publisher's printed wraps. Hinges reinforced with scotch tape tips a bit worn sound and unmarked otherwise. Quite a scarce volume. 'Here for the first time in the history of orientalist scholarship is a complete critical edition of the Kitäb sirr al-khaliqa The Book of the Secret of Creation in its Arabic text; it is also titled Kitab al-'ilal The Book of the Causes. A separate study of the tradition of the text together with a German abstract is planned to be published in the series Ars Medica. Together with the Tabula Smaragdina which originally had its place at the end of this treatise the Kitäb sirr al-khaliqa was one of the best known and most influential treatises in Arabic and Latin medieval alchemy and cosmology. Long ago this book was correctly identified as a spurious work of Apollonius of Tyana. No Greek predecessor is known and the Arabic text in the present form was probably composed around the time of the caliph Ma'mun A.D. 813-833. In many respects the Kitab sirr al-khaliqa resembles the Book of Treasures by Job of Edessa: like it the Kitäb sirr al-khaliga sheds a good deal of light on the broad spectrum of often rather crude explanations of the natural phenomena human physiology and pyschology and philosophical problems that provide the fertile soil for the growing scientific movement in the Islamic culture of the early ninth century. More specifically this Arabic text is of enormous interest for the study of the development of a scientific terminology in that language. The edition is mainly based on four manuscripts representing the most archaic recension and chosen from among seventeen that were examined out of some forty known to be extant. Even the critical edition of the Latin version prepared by M. T. D'Alverny and F. Hudry was consulted in a first draft. When we further consider that the editor had to write the 702-page Arabic text with all the variants diligently by hand the reader cannot fail to feel grateful for an amazingly well-executed contribution to the carly history of Arabic science.' The Metropolis of Chalcedon is an ecclesiastical territory diocese of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Christianity spread in Chalcedon during the 2nd century AD. The city was initially the see of a bishopric before being promoted to a metropolis at 451 AD at the time of the Fourth Ecumenical Council. It is one of the four remaining active Greek Orthodox Church metropolises of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey today and the only one surviving in Asia Minor Anatolia. During the 14th century the metropolitan see remained vacant due to the Ottoman conquest of the region. However it was reorganized in the 15th century possibly after the Fall of Constantinople and the subsequent incorporation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate into the millet system of the Ottoman society. The first recorded metropolitan of that time was Joseph in 1477. In the following years the jurisdiction of the metropolis was extended to the east. During the late 17th century the see of the diocese was transferred to Kuzguncuk Ermoulianai Chrysokeramos where it remained until 1855. At that period a number of monasteries were established like the one of Saint Panteleimon which was declared Stauropegic. The metropolitan of Chalcedon was one of the five Elder metropolitans from the wider region of Constantinople the other being those of nearby Herakleia Cyzicus Nicaea and Nicomedia. Following an Ottoman decree of 1757 they had to be always present in the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and had direct access to the Ottoman Sultan to whom they announced the election of the new Ecumenical Patriarch. From the mid-19th century the local metropolis prospered thanks to the significant population increase and economic development of the local Orthodox population. In 1855 the see of the metropolitan returned to Chalcedon during the primateship of Metropolitan Gerasimos. Moreover the newly erected church of Saint Euphemia became the new cathedral. The metropolitan mansion was built near the cathedral in 1902. This is the first and only known printed regulation book of the Greek Community in Chalcedonia Kadiköy. Extremely rare.

Typg. A. Koromila paperback

According to Article 1 of the agreement a compulsory population exchange was to be carried out between Muslims residing in Greek territory and Greek Orthodox Christians settled in Turkish territory beginning on May 1 1923 Oran. The primary rationale behind this exchange was the desire of both countries to create ethnically homogeneous societies within their respective borders. Article 2 of the agreement stipulated that Greeks residing in Istanbul and Muslims residing in Western Thrace were excluded from the exchange and considered established residents établis. However the different interpretations of this article by the two countries led to significant disagreements Metintas. These disagreements persisted for a long time and when no resolution could be reached the matter was brought before the League of Nations. Still no solution emerged and the case was eventually referred to the Permanent Court of International Justice which issued a non-binding advisory opinion. Yet the issue remained unresolved Firat. Bilateral negotiations continued for years and finally led to the signing of the Ankara Agreement between the two governments on June 10 1930.
