158837032Genevae: Henricus Stephanus 1588. Folio 33 cm; 13". 6 ff. 555 1 blank pp. 8 ff. lacks final blank leaf; lacks vol. II Epistles Revelation.

An interleaved and heavily annotated copy of the Gospels and Acts of "Beza's third major edition of the Greek New Testament. The text follows that of the second major edition 1582 with only five exceptions" Darlow and Moule. => One should note that the title-page proclaims this "quarta editio" and that this is Estienne's third folio printing of Beza's N.T.
Beza's New Testament Greek text is here accompanied by his Latin and the Vulgate i.e. Catholic Latin translations the trio appearing in parallel columns on each page with => extensive notes that often fill as much as one-third to one-half of a page and with parallel references additionally set in the margins. The volume's title-page is printed in red and black and bears Henri Estienne's printer's device; a different finely wrought woodcut headpiece opens each book with each column on those pages bearing a woodcut initial at its head and a few of the books of the N.T. end with woodcut tailpieces.
Evidence of readership: An interleaved copy with => the vast majority of the leaves bearing an early 19th-century reader's notes and annotations. The notes cite references published as late as 1809 and it is clear that the natively German-speaking scholar was comfortable in Greek Hebrew Latin and English.
Provenance: Ownership signature on title-page of Leon St. Vincent. Later in The Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released; no markings.
The paper stock used for the interleaving has the classic ProPatria watermark and that and its countermark match Churchill's 151 which has a starting date of 1799.
   Â
Darlow & Moule 4650; Adams B1711. On the interleaves' watermarks see: Churchill Watermarks in paper in Holland England France etc. in the XVII and XVIII centuries. 19th-century half vellum with German pastepaper over boards spine with tinted and tooled label text recased and new endpapers; vol. I only of this production without the Epistles and Revelation. Title-page creased and dust-soiled all leaves before pp. 9/10 rodent-gnawed in lower outside corner with loss of paper but not of text or manuscript annotation and a bit of light waterstaining to rearmost leaves only. => An important edition and a singular copy. 1886008070London: Chatto and Windus 1886. First Edition. Full Morocco. Custom cloth clamshell box. Fine. Extra-illustrated large paper and a special Bayntun full brown crushed morocco onlay binding featuring a centerpiece of the Palace of Westminster. No. 85 of 111 large paper editions. With a gorgeous Bayntun onlay binding featuring a centerpiece of the Palace of Westminster the current Parliament building. 4to. 26 by 21 cm. xxvii 1 403 1 pp. Including folding frontis nine of the additional plates are hand-colored four of which are choice Gillray prints. Many of the plates are double paged and a few are folding. Regarding the binding all edges gilt. Gilt ruled borders on boards -- six evenly spaced lines with jutting squared corners suggestive of a fortification design. These within a simple outer ruled border close to the edge. Five raised bands with compartments decorated with ruled rectangles and corner dots. Turn-ins with corner abstracted floral decoration. Attractive armorial bookplate of Colonel Sir Harold Mitchell 1900-1983 businessman and politician who was at one point vice chairman of the Conservative Party under Churchill. He was created a baronet in 1945. The title became extinct with his death. Clamshell box has stains especially heavy on one of the sides and one spine edge is worn through with its cloth entirely lifted and rolling away with frayed threads apparent and the underlying card exposed. Still this box retains structural integrity and has clearly helped preserve the pristine quality of the book's extradordinary binding. Photo File. Chatto and Windus unknown

First Edition of the New Testament in Modern Greek. First edition of the New Testament translated into modern Greek. An important and attractive publication sponsored by the States General of Holland to foster amity between the Greek and Reformed Churches. The modern Greek was prepared by the monk Maximus of Gallipoli and the edition was authorized by the Patriarch of Constantinople Cyril Lucarius who contributed a Preface. The edition is reported to have consisted of some 1500 copies. The rationale behind the preparation of this text was much the same as the impetus leading to the publication by Elzevier of a modern Greek translation of the Dutch Reformed Catechism in 1648. Kata tous Hevdomekonta. Cambridge: James Field 1664. 12mo. 1 f 171 1 blank pp. lacks blank leaf k6.
The mid-17th century was a low point in the history of English typography but in this pair of Anglican religious texts James Field printer to the University of Cambridge produced => a very good example of the printer's art of Greek printing especially in the use of a small point size. The guiding force behind their production was James Duport 160679 dean of Peterborough and master of Magdelene College Cambridge a noted scholar of Latin and Greek and supporter of the university press. The preface to the Book of Common Prayer is signed with his initials and it is established that he was the editor of the Psalms; the texts were almost certainly issued together but are also at times found individually in contemporary binding.
Field's minute typography here is dense and presented chiefly in double-column format in both works; and instead of woodcut head- or tailpieces and xylographic initials he deploys printer's ornaments to enliven the text at the top of some sections and occasionally elsewhere. => The layout is overall lovely and thoughtful and the printing is extremely clear and precise.
Binding: Contemporary morocco with covers framed in a single blind fillet; spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-stamped compartment decorations. Marbled endpapers all edges gilt. => All pages ruled in red in the best style of the era.
Provenance: Isaac Watts 16741748 the godfather of English hymnody is also fondly remembered for his Psalms of David: Imitated in the Language of the New Testament a work that was reprinted over a thousand times. His ownership signature is on the blank leaf opposite the BCP title-page here. Later the volume was owned by Charles Mayo 17671858 a scholar of Old English who dated his ownership as "St. John's College Oxford 1787." Most recently in the library of American collector of Greek printing Albert A. Howard small booklabel "AHA" at rear.
   Â
BCP: Benton Book of Common Prayer 2nd ed. p. 25 no. 122; ESTC R24205; Wing 2nd ed. Bound as above extremities a little rubbed with small chip at head of spine and edges of label chipped; joints strengthened some time ago and volume varnished. Inscriptions and small booklabel as above; pages gently age-toned otherwise clean. => A solid and attractive copy of an attractive production with wonderful provenance. James Field hardcover books
