This study focuses on the pardons of the Hamidian era by using the petitions which were written by the convicts, accused people or their relatives to the Sublime Porte. Beside the lives, prison conditions and accusations of the convicts, the pardon petitions constitute a useful source to see the nature of the relationship between state and the ordinary people. This study argues that although requesting a pardon seems to have been a kind of obedience to the authority, the relationship established on pardons was established through bargains and negotiations. The process of granting pardons was an interactive one in which the actors negotiated on the conditions according to the position of supplicant. Also, the petitions allow us to see the debated characteristics of the Hamidian era from the eyes of the ordinary people. This study claims that the pardon was a state policy and it was especially applied during the Armenian Events of the 1890s, the banditry problem and tribal conflicts. Moreover, to gain the loyalties of the outlaws, to use them as informers and collaborate with them in the critical areas of the Empire, pardons were a step in allowing the state to make alliances without losing its prestige. Through the discretionary power of forgiveness, the Sultan tried to restore the monarchical ideology, namely the merciful image of Sultanic rule, which was a distinctive element of monarchical power. While granting pardons, the Abdülhamid regime expected from the convict less loyalty or regret than certain services, and active collaboration on particular issues - a tension which constituted the dynamics of the pardon negotiations.

Nonostante le discriminazioni che i nazisti impongono da subito agli ebrei, cerca di vivere normalmente la sua vita. Fino a quando il padre viene deportato a Buchenwald: Zdenka non lo rivedrà più. Nel 1942 viene deportata, insieme alla famiglia e al fidanzato Arno, a Terezín, un campo di concentramento a nord-ovest di Praga. Pur nella loro autonomia e nonostante l'azione si svolga in epoche e in luoghi diversi - da Amsterdam a Roma, da Venezia a Londra e Berlino -, le storie che compongono questa raccolta costituiscono una narrazione unitaria e armonica. La scena perduta è un affresco reale e immaginato di simboli religiosi, d amore materno e sensuale. Dopo il successo di Il fuoco amico, lo scrittore e drammaturgo israeliano narra ancora una volta una storia di sentimenti contrastati in cui il rapporto di coppia è vissuto come una sorta di legame innaturale, non vincolato da legami sanguigni e per questo estremamente complesso. Il regista Yak Moses è a Santiago per una retrospettiva sul suo lavoro cinematografico, accompagnato dall attrice Ruth. Yak è ormai anziano, ma l amore e la passione per la donna protagonista di molti suoi film sono ancora molto forti. Il rapporto con l attrice è complesso e frammentato e Yehoshua lo rappresenta sia verbalmente sia attraverso l uso di una sorta di macchina da presa inserita nel racconto. Tutto però sembra andare per il meglio in questa specie di celebrazione del successo di una vita di Yak fino a quando l uomo non si accorge che nella sua stanza d albergo c è un quadro che lo turba: la rappresentazione fiamminga della carità romana. Nell affresco la giovane fanciulla Pero allatta il padre Cimone, chiuso in carcere e condannato a morire. Questo dipinto apparentemente innocuo dà il via ad una serie di tormenti interiori e di decisioni di Moses. Il regista ricorda infatti che la carità romana è un immagine iconografica che sarebbe dovuta apparire in uno dei suoi film più celebri e che Ruth si rifiutò di girare. Da quell episodio si scatenarono una serie di litigi con lo sceneggiatore di tutti i suoi film, Trigano, all epoca anche fidanzato di Ruth e ora proprio organizzatore della rassegna cinematografica dedicata a Yak. Cosa comporterà il ritorno dell uomo nelle loro vite? Sarà l occasione per una riconciliazione o il momento di una rottura definitiva? In questa sorta di epifania descritta da Yehoshua il non detto ci addolora e induce all autocritica il protagonista
