1663195824London: Thomas Roycroft 1663. First folio edition of Ogilby's translation of Virgil's works. Fine Binding. First Folio Edition of Ogilby's translation of Virgil's works magnificently illustrated with frontispiece portrait of Ogilby double-page map of Greece and Italy and 100 splendid full-page copper-engraved plates. With a frontispiece portrait of Virgil by Cleyn after Lombart engraved portrait of Ogilby by Faithorne after Lilly folding map opp. P. 117 and 101 full-page engravings by W. Hollar W. Faithorne and P. Lombart after designs by F. Cleyn. Folio 392 x 257 mm bound in near-contemporary French brown morocco spine gilt à la groteque marbled edges a. E. G. London: Roycroft 1663. One of the very few notable English illustrated books of the Restoration period "a great folio with plates dedicated to noble patrons by Pierre Lombart" Pollard Great Books p. 289. This elaborate English production was much admired by the French: "Belle édition exécutée en gros caractères. Elle est recommandable par le grand nombre et la qualité des gravures dont elle a été ornée. Ces gravures on été faites par le plus habiles artistes de ce tems Hollar et autres au depens de différens Seigneurs d'Angleterre." De Bure no. 2686. Thiscopy was no doubt bound in France at an early date possibly for "Claude Le Muet Lemuet Tresorier de Legle d'Auxerre" whose name is inscribed on p. 95 it was erased from the title-page. Ogilby's Latin edition of Virgil was first published in 1658; the illustrations first appeared in his second English translation of Virgil in 1654. The above work which is described by Brueggemann as a "Splendidum opus forma augusta contains the Bucolics Georgics and Aeneid. As Lowndes has shown copies of Ogilby's Latinedition of Virgil were prized by such noteworthy collectors as Towneley the Marquis of Townshend La Valliere Count MacCarthy Reagh Hibbert and the Duke of Roxburghe. The engravings were executed by Wenceslaus Hollar William Faithorne and Pierre Lombart after designs by Franz Cleyn. Cleyn 1590 Rostock- 1658 London was for some time in the employment of Christian IV King of Denmark. He worked as an artist in Rome for four years after which time he embarked to London where he served as an artist in the court of James I and until the Civil War Charles I. This is a choice copy all the more remarkable owing to the fact that seventeenth-century English books almost never survive in tolerable condition. Furthermore very few English books of the period were so grandly illustrated as here. Frontispiece mounted; inscription on lower blank portion of final leaf excised. An extremely attractive copy from the Ambrose Firmin Didot collection with leather book-label.; Folio - over 12" - 15" ta. Thomas Roycroft unknown

1922204721922. Full Limp Red Calf. Slipcase -- marbled paper pastedown on all sides other than opening. Chemise or inner folder -- thick glossy card stock all sides other than that has red calf with title label. Emily Swinton. Magnificent illuminated manuscript version of the Rubaiyat or some verses from the Rubaiyat. The illuminated borders are singular -- their design is unlike that we are familiar with and not even vaguely similar to anything we have ever seen produced by a latter-day illuminator professional or amateur. Their tracery is of blues greens reds some yellow in a few instances and not least the all important gilt. The illuminator surely was paying homage to some Islamic and Persian illumination in her palette but overall these sources are but influences; the illuminations are far from merely imitative. The design pulls you in and as one gazes longer one will discover small figurative imagery woven into the lines and swirls of the larger ornamentation. Words are beyond us to come close to capturing their complexity and character -- our photos hopefully will impart something of that. Let us just say the colors are deep and bold. Within these extraordinary borders is the calligraphic text rendered in a stunning easily legible Gothic Fraktur script. And there are four dream-like miniature watercolors as well of scenic Persian villages. N.d. circa early 1920s. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated 14 leaves with illumination -- illumination on one side. The back side of the leaf then left blank. Tissue guards for each page with illumination. The first leaf has no text -- it is a rectangular abstract design suggestive perhaps of a spectacular rug and inspired by such illuminated painting as one finds in many an antiquarian Koran. The next leaf is the title page with the words appearing to float on the page. The lettering has a distinctive verticality and the gilt letters are both clearly the letters they are supposed to be but have an abstraction that one can imagine they are Arabic script as well. The last two leaves with a more restrained formalistic illumination has evenly spaced dome-shaped pointers as one finds in Koranic decoration to highlight important passages. The binding slipcase and chemise are functional but don't really do the contents justice. Other than some crease marks on the calf and light wear overall to these protective features the binding and slipcase present no issues. unknown

It contains "The Wisdom of Marcus Aurelius" "The Eclogues of Vergil" "Sayings of Epictetus" "Selections from Gesta Romanorum" "Odes of Anacreon Anacreontics and Other Selections from the Greek Anthology" "The Satires of Horace" "The Story of Odysseus in the Land of the Phacians Being the Sixth and a Part of the Seventh Book of the Odyssey" "Selections from Aristophanes and Lucian" "The Olympic and Pythian Odes of Pindar" and selections from the Koran translated by George Sale. The project was undertaken by writer translator and editor Nathan Haskell Dole a popular member of the Boston literary set. Educated at Philips Andover and Harvard he was much influenced by family friends like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. He showed an early facility for languages teaching himself to read French German Greek and Latin. Our set was designed by Dole to be the crown jewel of a library combining beauty and luxury with Classical erudition. The bindings here are unsigned but are very similar to those on a copy of this work in the Phoebe Boyle sale bound by the Adams Bindery. Ralph Randolph Adams was along with Henry Stikeman and a handful or others one of the great American art bookbinders of his era. His workshop produced bindings of notable beauty and craftsmanship. The New York Times 11 October 1902 described an Adams binding as "so exquisite in design and execution that those long skeptical of the ability of Americans to bind artistically should now be convinced of their error. . . . It is to be hoped that all American binders will be encouraged to strive toward producing designs like Adams' that are in a measure original and which show more of the individual touch of the artist.". Fisher 1908-1992 contributed an introduction to the second Arion Press book "A Commonplace Book of Cookery" in 1975 but died before we were able to pay tribute to her by publishing her first major literary work a translation of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's 1755-1826 famous gastronomic essays. This book originally made for hire in 1948 for the Limited Editions Club formed her as an author on subjects relating to food wine dining and living well in the largest sense. <br /> <br /> She became a good friend of the Press extending invitations to "the crew" to come to her home in St. Helena for a hike and a swim followed by lunch where the conversation was always lively but never about food.<br /> <br /> The artist Wayne Thiebaud delivered to Hoyem a large pile of original ink drawings and told him to use what he wanted. Hoyem made photocopies of the drawings and sorted and combined them as he saw fit and Thiebaud immediately approved the selection. He also made the nine lithographs in color and drew a design for the cover of the binding that showed the skills he learned as a commercial graphic artist. 1953000662New York: Etting Emlen Self Published 1953. Soft cover. Very Good. 8 1/2 x 11. Etting Emlen. Emlen Etting's unpublished translation original manuscript with his 6 watercolor drawings for that of Rainer Maria Rilke's prose poen The Song of Love and Death of Standard-Bearer Christoph Rilke Cornet Christoph Rilke. Typed manuscript title page 28 pp. dated 1953 with pencil ms. emendations and six original erotic ink and water-color illustrations by noted painter Emlen Etting signed. The manuscript is typed on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper while the water-color illustrations are on the verso of blank letterhead of the Philadelphia chapter of the Artists Equity Association of which Etting was at the time Chairman that paper being watermarked parchment stationery. Includes original shipping envelope see images. An unpublished translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's prose poem 1899 of war love and sex and the surreal but heroic death of Christoph Rilke in the seventeenth century accompanied by what would have been its erotic illustrations. Slumbering nudes mortally wounded heroes in the buff and love-making couples appear to be thematically revised as proofs. The original manila envelope in which all this was contained is included addressed from Etting at his Philadelphia address to himself in care of Midtown Galleries in New York City and says in part "6 Preparatory Sketches for 'Lovers' / Rilke's Song of Love and Death of the Standard-Bearer". Rilke's singular prose poem published as part of other titles but apparently never separately was by the name Cornet Christoph Rilke's Song of Love and Death and other variants the basis of an opera by Siegfried Matthus a symphony by Viktor Ullmann and other artistic treatments. Etting's translation here carries alternately and sometimes together stark surreal dreamlike melodic and poetic tone presumably true to the Rilke original the reading of which in its original language I am incapable. In any case here it is deeply and strangely moving in its own right. I found myself reading it aloud as if it were a play. Title sheet of manuscript slightly torn at top see scan; some see- through from verso of the water-colors. Overall better than very good. Not bound. A - somehow - spooky feeling pervades this set IMO. Ain't but one like this. LG-1 <br/> <br/> Etting, Emlen (Self Published) paperback

/// ENGLISH: Sanjian Shuwu (三閒書屋) - Yinyu ji (引玉集, “Collection to Draw Forth Jade”): Fifty-Nine Woodcuts (木刻五十九幅) - Second printing, April 1935 - Octavo (19.5 × 15.5 cm), publisher's boards with black spine and mounted title label on upper cover - 68 pages - 59 collotype (珂羅版) reproductions of Soviet woodcuts printed from original impressions supplied by the artists - Includes a text by Chen Jie (陳節), an abridged translation of an essay by A. ABOUT: Rare anthology devoted to modern Soviet wood engraving and printmaking, published in Shanghai by Sanjian Shuwu and distributed through Uchiyama Bookstore (內山書店). The volume gathers fifty-nine collotype reproductions of woodcuts by several leading figures of the Russian and Soviet printmaking revival of the 1920s and 1930s, including Vladimir Favorsky, Dmitri Mitrokhin, Alexei Kravchenko and Pavel Pavlinov. Accompanied by Chen Jie's abridged translation of an essay by Soviet art historian A. D. Chegodaev, as well as a preface, plate catalogue and postface, the work was conceived as an introduction to contemporary Soviet printmaking for Chinese readers. A remarkable testimony to Sino-Soviet artistic exchanges in Republican-era Shanghai, it belongs to the context of the New Woodcut Movement (新興木刻運動), then flourishing under the influence of left-wing intellectual circles and cultural networks associated with Uchiyama Bookstore and the figure of Lu Xun. The reproductions were assembled from Soviet books, periodicals and documentary sources discovered in the early 1930s, notably through the journal Graphika. A. The three large accession lists the Index and the Glossary were produced by the Foreign Document Evaluation Branch Development and Proof Services Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland. The five volumes were produced to streamline access to the massive array of engineering documents taken out of Germany and to facilitate the work of German and American scientists in jump-starting the American missile program.
