Duoecimo. 7x4.5". 478pp. Original dark brown leather with blind-stamped ruling and tooling on the covers and spine. Raised bands on the spine. Metal clasps. Red-speckled edges of the book block. An early Spanish-language edition of the complete Jewish High Holiday prayer book Machzor based on the original translation by Abraham Usque originally printed in Ferarra Italy in 1553. This edition contains some added material not previously present including most prominently Solomon ibn Gabirol's famed philosophical poem "Keter Malkhut" Royal Crown which over the years has come to be read as part of the Yom Kippur service in some Jewish traditions.

Published by Dr. Efraim Bueno and Jona Abravanel to serve members of the then sizable Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam. A significant portion of the community were former Conversos Jews who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain who then emmigrated and were able to reestablish their Jewish identity and thus were unable to read Hebrew hence the text's publication in Spanish. As stated in the foreword this edition includes some additions to the text not included in previous versions and omits some material deemed to have been unnecessary. The prayer book starts with the penitential prayers Selichot p.3-47 which includes decorative head and endpeices. This section is followed by the Rosh Hashanah service p.48-195 and then the Yom Kippur service including the "Keter Malkhut" p.254-289. Title page is has a decorative vignette printed in woodblock and is printed with the Hebrew date "5412". Pages 305-352 are misprinted as "321-368" with their correct numbers handwritten above in ink. All text in Spanish.

Binding with some rubbing and scratches to extremities and to the covers. Front hinge starting to split slightly at the head and tail of the spine. Missing one of the metal clasps on the back cover. Starting at interior covers. Some minor to light sporadic damp staining and foxing throughout the text. Period signature of the previous owner "Silva" in ink on on the title page and p.200. Name of another previous owner in ink on the interior back cover. Book block tight overall. Binding in good- interior in very good- condition overall. Quite scarce. Dr. Efraim Ephraim Bueno aka Martin Alvarez 1599-1665 was a Portuguese-born Jewish physician in Amsterdam of the famed Iberian-Jewish Bueno medical dynasty and prominent member of the city's Sephardic community. He served for many years as the personal physician to famed artist Rembrandt van Rijn who in fact depicted Bueno in two of his works one an etching and the other a painted portrait. He received his medical education and degree in Bordeaux and was known to have practiced medicine in Amsterdam until the time of his death. In addition to his medical practice Bueno was an accomplished biblical scholar who along with Jona Abravanel published numerous Jewish works the on the bible and Jewish Law.

Jona Abravanel 1593-1667 was a Sephardic Jewish poet in Amsterdam from the prominent Abravanel family. He was the nephew of Famed Portueguse-Dutch Rabbi and printer Menasseh ben Israel. Together with his uncle and Dr. Efraim Bueno he was responsible for publishing numerous works of Judiaca in the 17th century.

In this edition the title page was mistaken printed with the word "Kuyper" which was then correct via a scrap of paper pasted on top. The poetry evoked for me the verdancy of rogue plants that spring up between the cracks of concrete. It spoke of the appeal of being a snake allusions to original sin. I wanted the green onlays that have been dyed and embossed to be pillowed the stone inviting touch. I intended to create something that invites a sensory exploration." And here she has succeeded with astonishing grace creating a design that draws and keeps the attention. Wonderfully conceived and executed with exceptional skill. 182120381Milano: Presso Paolo Antonio Tosi & Comp. Typof Gio. Perottaography 1821. Hardcover. Pebbled cloth spines and corners. Marbled paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. A magisterial work on the immense symbolic and allegorical vocabulary used in painting and sculpture in the early Modern era. While no work could possibly encompass every iconographic essay nor hope to capture the infinite variants on particular iconographic notions this work comes as close as possible and brings order to the subject that probably baffles many a modern museum goer. Plus the illustrations are pleasing in and of themselves. 4to. Vol. 1: xii 17-240 8 pp. Missing pages with descriptions of plates 1 to 8. Vol. 2: 1-240 8 pp. Plate volume: 240 hand-colored etched plates all painted by Pistrucci. Think of a human personality trait or of any allegorical painting's subject and Pistrucci renders a version that captures the typical representation of it. Often times the representation is of a dichotomy such as day and night east and west early and late fertility and sterility. Pistrucci's style befits the mythological tenor of the genre and one can easily imagine the same images as part of the stately decoration of a monument an august public edifice a theater -- the ceiling fresco a frieze a sculpted pediment. Scattered light soiling including occasional foxing. Plates are generally clean and bright. Both volumes rebacked with black cloth spine labels preserved and mounted. Both copies tight. Moderate wear along edges. As mentioned already pages 1-16 missing from the first volume. Presso Paolo Antonio Tosi & Comp. Typof Gio. Perottaography hardcover

Despite the fact that the Strait of Sunda was sailed relatively frequently by European sailors Krusenstern's 1813-memoir is one of the earliest reliable pilots to this strait. From the present memoire: "Although a strait so important as that of Sunda frequented every year by more than 50 European ships ought to be as one would naturally suppose perfectly well known; notwithstanding which after having examined the charts of these coasts reputed the best I venture to say that I have been convinced that there does not exit one with which one can be entirely satisfied". 1631New York: Harper & Row Publishers 1970. First American Edition. A superlative copy of the Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The present example is a review copy with the publisher's typed slip laid in; the slip differs from other Harper & Row review slips from the same period in that in states "IMPORTANT: please note that this is UNCORRECTED PROOF." Also laid into this copy is a brief one page typed letter from Harper & Row publisher Cass Canfield Jr. to Dr. Howard B. Gotlieb former Director of Special Collections at Boston University. The letter is dated 21 October 1969 - some four months prior to publication of the book - and mentions the enclosure of an advance proof of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It isn't lost on us that the copy these materials came to us in is not an uncorrected proof of which we presently know of exactly 2 copies. We can only surmise that these proof materials were placed into this copy of the book in-house; Canfield whose business card is also laid into the book may have decided that Gotlieb should receive a hardbound copy and not a paperbound proof and thus would have placed the materials in one of the first hard copies manufactured. Evidence supporting copies in dustjacket with the "." on the front flap being printed prior to publication is discussed at length in Don Klein's 'Gabriel García Márquez: Una Bibliografía Descriptiva Tomo II.' In it Klein mentions that two editorial heads at Harper & Row received review copies directly from the printer both in jackets ending in "." Additionally the review copy received by translator Gregory Rabassa bore a jacket also ending in a "." and not the exclamation mark p.635-636. And while we are fully cognisant that review materials often migrate from copy-to-copy within the trade sufficient evidence is present that the migration here was more than likely the publisher's doing. The only such copy we have handled the only other known to us being the bibliographer's copy. Klein E2.a.1. First Printing one of 7500 copies.
