No. 117 of an edition limited to 950 copies printed by Pynson Printers New York hand-numbered and with Kent's thumb print on rear colophon. Though hard to spot because of the variegated cloth binding the front cover may show slight tanning toward the edges with minor foxing noted to deckled text block edges. Rear flyleaf appears to have been neatly excised along binding gutter though perhaps original to issue rear colophon is followed by two blanks and the paper used for the endpapers is consistent with that used throughout the text block interior otherwise fully intact and about as issued. Original gray paper dust jacket is in 5 pieces reassembled with minimal archival tape on verso and now in mylar. Random House Hardcover

Russian poet and novelist Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin 1799-1837 considered the founder of modern Russian literature wrote "Ruslan and Ludmilla" an epic fairy tale filled with adventure magic and love; it tells of the knight Ruslan who goes on a quest to rescue Ludmilla a princess of Kiev after she is kidnapped by an evil wizard. The story is told in verse and divided into six "Songs" and one epilogue; it was later adapted into an opera by famed Russian composer Mikhail Glinka 1804-1857.<br/><br/>Accompanying the poem are illustrations by Wassilij Masjutin Vasily Masyutin 1884-1955 a Russian-German artist who illustrated numerous books by Russian authors such as Fyodor Dostoevsky and Nikolai Gogol; for Pushkin's verses he creates full-length portraits of the characters and each is hand-coloured by R. Müller per the colophon. The prologue of the poem describes a cat walking around a tree on a gold chain a cat who tells fables and as it paces it begins to tell this tale; the cat pacing around the tree is illustrated on the front board of the book.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: White cloth spine with cream paper boards hand-coloured illustration of a cat pacing around a tree on the front board title and author written by hand in brown ink on the spine top edge stained red mauve endpapers title page in red and black with publisher's device in red text inside red ruled and decorative borders throughout full-page illustrations by Wassilij Masjutin hand-coloured by R. One of the "Collection Gravure Contemporaine" published by the Club du Livre this highlighting the work of Charles Matton-Pascalini 1931-2008. Matton who also went by Gabriel Pasqualini was an artist in many fields: painting sculpture photography and even film. <br /> <br /> This work with twenty lithographs by the artist. The Club du Livre's mission in the "Contemporary Engraving" collection sought "to bring together through original engraving and the artists who use it some of the characteristic aspects of contemporary art" n.b. from preface as translated by Google Lens. They continue: "If we like to give prints a decorative role in wall ornamentation it seems ultimately that we experience a more refined pleasure in discovering them between the leaves of a book alongside the words that inspired them." ibid<br /> <br /> Not only is the artwork visually stunning but the binding in true French style is impeccable.
