They come in all probability from the site of ancient Thebes." Introduction. Illustrated with fourteen b/w offset reproductions of the papyrus at rear with descriptive text on facing pages. Contains indices at rear.

"When complete the papyrus to which this fragment belonged measured almost seven feet long. The texts are written in a cursive form of hieroglyphs called hieratic. Differences in handwriting and in the historical events described demonstrate that different scribes added new inscriptions over several generations.

The most important text recounts the efforts of a Thirteenth Dynasty Theban noblewoman named Senebtisi to establish legal ownership of ninety-five household servants whose names indicate that forty-five were of Asiatic origin. The presence of so many foreigners in a single household suggests that the Asiatic population was increasing rapidly in Thirteenth Dynasty Egypt." Brooklyn Museum. The Brooklyn Museum hardcover

"In March 1960 the United Arab Republic appealed to the world through the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO to send archeologists to Nubia in order to save the antiquities - discovered or undiscovered - threatened with destruction by submersion under the great new lake to be created by the High Dam under construction on the Nile south of Aswan. The Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago was one of the first institutions to respond. Before March was ended a team was in Cairo arranging for the use of a boat to make a hasty preliminary survey of the Nile Valley in Egyptian Nubia in order to select sites and plan field operations. A four-year concession was granted from 1960 to 1964. The initial plans for areas to be surveyed excavated changed a few times as documented in the preface and the project eventually recorded materials in several areas from Abu Simbel south into the Sudan." 19553072461955. Nine-page ribbon-copy typescript of an English translation of Siquieros' critical look at Soviet art in the 1950s.

Based upon a limited comparison of this version with the text published in the January 1956 issue of Arte Público México D.F. this is a fairly literal English rendering of Siqueiros's remarks. It is a different translation from that published in the April 1956 issue of Masses and Mainstream. This typescript was found in a book from critic Selden Rodman's library with an unrelated postcard addressed to him suggesting he might have been the translator. It might also be a transcript of Siqueiros's lecture circulated by the Communist Party.

The source text used for this translation is not known. It seems unlikely to be Arte Publico as Siqueiros was very particular about emphasis rendered here with underlining. In Arte Publico the emphasized text was rendered in a slightly thinner typeface and the effect is quite subtle and hard to interpret without knowing the author's intentions.

As booksellers like to say when they aren't quite sure what they have "This merits further study" and I think it does as alternate text of a key exposition of a great artist's views.

Nine leaves 8-1/4 by 13-1/8 inches approx. 209 by 333 mm. Perhaps the odd paper size will be a clue to its origin. Very good with old folds and some spotting. Rust stains from a paperclip in the corner. With handcorrections in pencil in about 20 places. unknown

2 vols., 8vo., Second Edition, on laid paper, two early nineteenth signatures on titles, later signature on blank preliminary of both volumes; handsomely bound in early nineteenth century full tree calf, sides with decorative floral frame border in gilt, backs gilt extra, second and fourth compartments with red and green leather labels lettered and tooled in gilt, all other compartments ruled with Greek key and floral rolls enclosing a gilt star device, doublures tooled in gilt and blind, a clean, crisp and most attractive copy. Dedicated to Warren Hastings, late Governor General of Bengal, Hamilton's first novel appeared in 1796 to considerable acclaim. It satirises society through the device of Oriental letters on the model of works by Montesquieu and Goldsmith, its theme being that women also can be both strong and able. The Preface, based partly on her brother's experiences in India, is both extensive and erudite. Elizabeth Hamilton (1758-1816), Irish novelist, essayist and poet. Born in Belfast, she moved as a child to Stirling, later to London, and finally to Edinburgh in 1804. She directed all her works to her own sex whose qualities of mind she admired and promoted. She was praised by Maria Edgeworth and, famously, by Jane Austen who was pleased that such 'a respectable writer' had read Sense and Sensibility. Block, p.96; Todd, p.147. See CBEL III, p.398.
